I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile and ported my # (this occurred on Wed.)
Since then my text messaging has been at best somewhat erratic. I can send and receive text messages from other iPhone users (as this is done through iMessage) and appear to be able to receive messages from people with other phones in some instances.
In other cases however such as when signing up for My T-Mobile to access my account settings it will not send me a text message of my temporary password to login, so I am effectively locked out of registering. I'm having issues with other sites sending me text messages as well (from testing).
Has anyone else encountered this?
Apparently there is a short message ability that needs to be turned on for your account
I would call T Mobile tech support and specifically ask them about this.
Also - you mentioned texts - is it just SMS or can you not receive both SMS and MMS from non - iPhone accounts?

I can send and receive both SMS and MMS from non iPhone accounts (I tested this by disabling the iMessage service on two phones - one of which is on Verizon) and sending messages between them.
I have exactly the same problem here. I can receive messages except the temporary password one. I got a new account and transferred previous phone number (also a TMO account).
I called customer support, and they cannot solve the problem either. Have to wait for help from some special technical support.
I am somewhat surprised that there is no email option for this. Apparently the only option to unlock the account or recover the password is a text option.
Here is another thing you guys can try:
Go to the store and see if the person there can temporarily transfer your number to a loaner phone (preferably a non Apple product) and see if that works to recover your account. It may get around the issue of text reception and also help troubleshoot.
Update: Problem solved by technical support.
Were they able to explain to you what the issue was?
No idea. I called customer support on Saturday, and was told to wait for 24-72 hours (means Monday to Wednesday since those technical guys do not work on weekends). Then I received a message (with a temporary password) this morning.
I too was finally able to register myself on My T-Mobile (It just suddenly seemed to start working, without any intermediate steps) I am still a bit unsure of the text messaging situation as one or two other services that have tried to send me SMS messages still don't appear to be received.
IF you have the iPhone can you check for "blocked numbers" - sometimes stuff can get in there from the messages screen
Been a while since I posted this so I'm gonna respond and say that things seem to be working for the most part. I just checked and verified that I was able to get into the sites that had not been sending me text messages.
I don't know why the issue was occurring. The only thought I can come up with is that with porting from another carrier maybe caused this.
