Unlocked Galaxy S9+ not connecting to international networks

I've been abroad 3 times in the last 6 months (Japan twice, Canada once). Each time my phone will not connect to any networks aboard - no calls/text/data. Networks do show up during a scan, but manually selecting a network fails as well.

    My phone:

Unlocked Galaxy S9+ (purchased directly from Samsung)

    What I've tried:

My phone was previously on a different network last year (Sprint). At that time I was able to successfully connect internationally (Italy).

In the last trip to Canada I switched my SIM card with my wife's phone (iPhone 7). After switching my SIM worked correctly in her iPhone. Her SIM did not work in my Galaxy.

This makes me think something must be wrong with the network connection settings. While abroad I did reset the Access Point Names to the defaults, but that didn't work either.

Unfortunately I've spent many hours on the phone with T-Mobile support, and they have not been able to resolve this issue.
