A ridiculously simple international roaming question

I have TMO One 55+ in the USA;  if I travel to Europe, do I simply turn on Data Roaming to use the included 128K international data?

I ask because I was recently in France and Italy, and when I enabled Data Roaming, my phone displayed the "LTE" indicator and data was much faster than I expected.  I figured I was using some other higher-cost form of roaming, and avoiding using it unless essential;  I haven't seen a bill yet to know if my concern was justified.

What's the right way to do it?
