Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

magenta6231016

As the title says I am getting duplicate messages to my galaxy watch. When im connected to bluetooth everything works fine, texts sync properly when read on one device. However whenever i disconnect from my phone and switch to LTE i get every text ever all pver again. Literally 1000's. You would think the solution would be to leave lte on all the time? Wrong. When i leave lte on all the time then my watch and phone dont sync! If i read the text on my watch it wont update ththe phone anand vice versa. The point of the watch is to be able for the phone and watch to sync AND to leave your phone behind. Ive read dozens of users experienceing the same problem whats the fix tmoble? Ps this isnt an issue with the apple watch lte

Hi, im having the exact same problem with my Samsung Galaxy Watch.... once i disconnect my watch from bluetooth, a bunch of my old messages begin to come in and my watch keeps buzzin and buzzin. Any help with this issue? Thank you

Hey guys dont waste your time with this

Spoke with tmoble and unfortunately this is how the samsung galaxy watch was "designed" for the lte model. I put it in quotes because it wasnt designed that way, they rigged it to work lol. This issue doesnt exist with the apple watch. The apple watch works and synce correctly on lte and its because of imessage. So the issue isnt 100% tmobles fault but come on tmoble your killing it right now, dont sell subpar equipment just to get it to consumers. Im reading literally 100's of people all across the internet (reddit, here, other forums, etc) return this device. Ive made more peofiles across more websites over the last 24 hours to discuss this issue then i have all year. To summerize the watch is broken on lte. Great watch, get the bluetooth model. Or switch to apple unfortunately if you want a working lte watch. Please do not mark this as "solved" you saying the watch is working as intended doesnt mean that it is.

Whatever the sht that means.  unforuntely i will have  i i will be returning the watch as well, makes no sense to pay all this money plus the service for something that does not work properly and thats how its "designed " good job tmobile and samsung

              Hey, magenta6231016 and floresr639!

This would drive me up the wall and thankfully my watch doesn't do this. I'm going to check with my Samsung guru to see if I can get a solid answer on this. I'll make sure to hop back on this thread once I have an answer which is hopefully different from the ones you both have been given. *fingers crossed*

                  Hey everyone,

I just received an update that the person that our Samsung guru will be out of the office until the end of next week so I will likely not have an answer for you until then. I'm incredibly sorry this is happening as I can't imagine how frustrating it is. If my Apple Watch did that, I honestly probably wouldn't use it as much as I do now. I'm going to keep searching for answers and different contacts in the meantime.

Look at all these returns, it’s nothing short of embarrassing. Go look anywhere on the internet everyone is talking about how the lte version doesn’t work lmao. Switched to an iPhone X and the Apple Watch series 3 and couldn’t be happier. Thank you for at least making the switch easy. Please stop seeing the galaxy watch until Samsung figures out lte.

                      Hello, Everyone!

While some of you may have return the Galaxy Watch already and no longer need updates on the issue, I'd still like to keep this thread updated. My Samsung contact got back early from his time off which means I should hopefully have a response no later than tomorrow.

                        Happy almost Friday!

I just wanted to check in to see if anyone has had a chance to try the steps I posted a few days ago. If so, did the duplicate texts stop coming in once you connected to LTE?

Re: Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

Hello, and thanks again for pursuing this solution. I wanted to test for

                            a few days before replying.

Unfortunately, it did not provide a good solution. On turning off that

setting and then back on, I didn't get duplicate messages. However, it

became clear that this was because all notifications from the messages

app. On reallowing messages to send notifications, I am once again

                            getting duplicate messages.

Some additional information, I am predominantly using the watch tethered

through bluetooth, with LTE in auto mode (turns on if bluetooth

disconnects). It is when the watch and phone get out of bluetooth range

that the duplicate messages arrive, perhaps 15 minutes after disconnect.

Same issue as original poster. Has anyone found a fix? I tried the above and it did not work. I have called tmobile and they put in a ticket and told me it would be fixed in 72 hours. It's not.

Re: Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

A good question would be do you have the DIGITS app (native or otherwise) enabled on your phone with your phone number? I ask mostly out of curiosity because when I have mine on, I get multiple notifications from DIGITS regarding messages that I've already read in my regular Android Messages app.

Re: Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

No I don't. I have my main number off in the app. When I spoke to the rep he said it's supposed to do that when it kicks over to Mobile networks/disconnects from bluetooth, all your messages are supposed to come thru. He said to turn on mobile networks on my watch to stay on all the time. My watch was dead in 3 hours. I had 100's of messages come thru at a time. Another issue I am having and I sent him pictures, I have 2 contacts when they text me it comes thru as if its from my watch number.

Re: Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

Hello. I tried both routes from the thread.

With DIGITS for the watch disabled and bluetooth / wireless connection

on, things work well. However, then the watch won't connect to the phone

                                        number on LTE.

With DIGITS enabled for the watch and bluetooth / wireless connection

off, the phone and watch get copies of all messages somewhat

simultaneously. Sort of works, but as other noted, involves heavy

                                        battery drain.

It isn't really a good solution to have to log in to enable / disable

DIGITS each time the watch is to be used separate from the phone. It

also takes time for enable / disable to take effect; a few minutes but

the point is to be able to go use the watch (for a run, for example)

without the phone. Inconvenient to have to wait some time before heading

                                        out.

                                        So, no good solution.

Re: Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

Mine seems to be working now. I haven't noticed 100's of txt coming thru when it disconnects from my phone anymore. I did have a trouble ticket in and also followed your recommendations. I did toggle the remote connection in the settings. So which ever worked I don't know, but I'm happy right now! I have noticed the battery life is not as low at the end of the day, it's around 50% not 20%.  So it defiantly is on its way to being as good as the s3.

Just a one-user warning story, don't update the watch software. I got a notification this past weekend that one was available, so am now on R815USQU1BRJ3. On LTE, battery drain has dramatically gone up. Starting from a full battery at 8AM, I used to have about 50% at 7PM. Past two days, the battery ran out of power around 6PM.

They called in the Samsung rep to help set it up. So far so good. He has me testing the battery with the new settings. LTE is always on and it does work but the battery drain on the first one was with in 3 hours dead. So I am testing this one. Another problem I was having was a couple people in my contacts, their number was coming thru as the digits number. That happened a couple times last night but has corrected itself as of now. Anyways I can go over the settings if you like for the message problem how he set it up, but keep in mind I do not know how the battery life will be. I'm hoping for at least 14 hours. Also this one updated the software this morning with the newest version.

My understanding is that this would keep the watch on LTE - no bluetooth of Wi-fi connection, but communication with my phone through the Samsung account. This setup was the best before the update, providing decent battery life, no duplicate/past messages coming in when switching to LTE-only, and only a few quirks.

This morning, I re-toggled all the settings listed above (turned them to their other states and back) and am getting better battery life today (5 hrs and battery at 70%) so things are looking better.

It did update so I'll give it a few days to settle in with new watch syndrome.

that's what i'm afraid of having to do, is toggle the "always on" feature on the mobile data as that DOES seem to prevent the duplicate messages.  The problem i have with that is that with it set to "auto" i get 3 days and 2 nights of battery before i have to charge my watch.  With mobile data always on I am using about 6% of battery per hour meaning that my watch won't even last a full day which is not acceptable for me considering the device was advertised to have a 5 day battery (i have the 46mm).  I don't expect actually getting that long but I don't feel that we should have to sacrifice the battery life completely just to fix a bug.

It would be great if there was any more information on the issue from T-mobile's perspective, because TBH I am getting pointed both ways.  Samsung has indicated to me that it is an issue with how my DIGITS is set up that is causing the duplication while T-Mobile is indicating that it's a software issue on the watch itself.

I honestly don't think it's on the digits side. I think its something in the software.  Yesterday was the first day with the replaced watch and the new settings. I got 14.5 hours and it had 15% when I went to bed. Today I'm hitting about 5% per hour so far. So far everything is working correctly. I checked the battery usage and it is showing watch faces using the most (15%) which I'm using a stock dark face. Also notifications at 11%. I'm going to keep an eye over it the next week and see if it improves. I figured the first day or so would be a little less because of updates. Also the advertised battery life being on the longer side was for the BT version and size 42mm vs 46mm. Even the best of the best of smart watches have a 2 day battery life. If I get that or close I'll be happy!

                                                                                  • magenta6596678

                                                                                    • magenta6238774

Hi dupsla, many thanks for sharing your watch settings! Since re-toggling the settings, I'm getting better battery life as well; after 12 hours I was at 25%.

                                                                                      To T-Mobile tech:

I'm not sure where DIGITS ends and software begins, but I think it has to do something with the intersection of these, and it does relate to battery life.

It looks to me that if the watch is not communicating through LTE and using the DIGITS framework, incoming messages are just stored until such a connection is made. This would happen when disconnecting from a BT-linked watch with LTE on AUTO (LTE off if BT is on). This behavior makes sense for a phone as most of the time it would be connected to a mobile network / LTE. For the current watches, however, the problem is that having LTE on shortens battery life from the two or more days (which we get with for BT modes) to less than a day. It would be a great thing to be able to keep LTE off when there are other connections to the phone available, but then the messages get stored for later delivery when there is a mobile / LTE reconnect. I get the same behavior when I start DIGITS on my iPad, all the messages that piled up since the last time there was a connection now come through.

So, better synchronization of messages across devices through DIGITS would potentially solve this, whether it is in the watch software or DIGITS infrastructure. My Apple-centric colleagues tell me duplicate messages aren't an issue in that system, so iMessage evidently sorted this out. I hope I am just missing a setting somewhere, and look forward to a solution.

                                                                                        • magenta6596678

Re: Galaxy Watch LTE duplicate messages

It would be great if it know when it is paired with a phone and any messages batched while that pairing is in place do not go through.  That would solve the duplicates.  Or just somehow allow them to arrive instantaneously instead of 1 at a time.  Anything is better than what is is because as mentioned above, turning on always on LTE DOES appear to solve the problem, but it also reduces the battery life to a level that is not acceptable.  My watch lasts 3 days with LTE set to auto and less than 16 hours with it always on.

There MUST be a work around.  Please let us know if you are still actively looking into this or not.

Tmobile tonight said the update released on Oct. 19th should have fixed the issue but it did not.

                                                                              Under the watch Settings/Connections:

                                                                              • magenta6596678

Just want to be clear that an it's not an acceptable fix for this issue to simply turn on mobile networks always on.  I think that suggestion came from a user not an admin but want to make sure this thread doesnt derail bc of it.  That setting kills battery life from 3 days 2 nights down to less than 24 hours and doesnt actually fix the issue.  We need to be able to use "automatic" mobile settings, connect via bluetooth when in range, and not get duplicate messages when out of range.

It's been weeks since this thread was made and it's a fairly well known issue that has existed since release, surely theres an update to be had?

Is it possible to pursue a solution with the DIGITS team as well? While connected to LTE, I'm getting messages on both my phone and watch (a good thing, as they are not being delayed in delivery) but messages don't synchronize as being read across devices. I'm thinking this involves DIGITS as the DIGITS app on an iPad and Win10 computer shows the same behavior.

We look forward to a solution to this problem!

Great call out, magenta6238774! The Samsung team is also already working with the DIGITS team to determine if that's the underlying issue. Unfortunately, I do not have any updates at this time. They're currently going back and forth trying to find a permanent solution that also doesn't drain the Watch battery.

For those asking if there are any options to return the device outside of the buyer's remorse period - currently, we do not have any update to extend the buyer's remorse period for the Galaxy Watch. If that changes, I'll most definitely update this thread. I have passed the request along but cannot make any promises that the return period will be changed.

It seems like something that could be implemented in DIGITS or the watch messages app.

This problem has become more annoying as we enter the holiday season, as folks are comparing functionality between watches and carriers in their gift decisions. I'd love to be able to tell others that this increasingly-heard-about problem is solved for the LTE Galaxy watch on T-mobile.

Me, my wife, and my sister in law are all having this issue with our watches. I wish I had known about this issue sooner as it would have been a deal breaker for me and I am past the window for a return. Our household has now spent ~$800 on two of these watches and only recently did I discover this problem, as I'm usually on BT.

I acknowledge that the always on LTE/Disable Bluetooth settings do fix the flood of notifications issue, but it still duplicates the notifications on both phone and watch which is almost as annoying. As mentioned above, I also do not accept this as a solution.

If this issue isn't resolved, what are my options as a customer past the 14 day mark? Just sell the watch privately? I don't think that's fair since this is a defect in the software/system and not just because "I changed my mind". Reading about all these returns makes me regret my purchase.

                                                                                            • magenta6898941

Just picked up a 46 and a 42 and immediately noticed the same issue. Additionally, group messages sometimes come in as separate messages from each sender. In some cases appearing in both the group thread and separately, other times in only one or the other. I'm assuming that happened when the watch switched between Bluetooth/LTE. An under 2 day battery life would be a dealbreaker for me too. Any update on this? I now have 6 days left to decide!

They are aware of the problem. He said it is on their back end and have had success with a fix with others. He took my numbers and said to give it 48 hours and do a restart of both devices. Also he said you have to call in so they can expedite a fix. PLEASE call them and let them know your issue! They need your phone number and digits number for the fix. I guess I'll find out Thursday if it was fixed!

Thank you for encouraging others to call in to get this resolved as we have zero account access on our end to make any changes. I'm very curious what they changed to cause it to work when we've had multiple teams working on this.

Hello everyone! I'm happy to report an additional example of progress. Following dupsla's urging, I called T-mobile support and eventually got connected to the DIGITS team. We did the following:

                                                                                                      • Verify that my watch software was up to date. This was R815USQU1BRJ3, the release from mid/late October. I should note that after being on bluetooth connection with the phone again (yay!, as I had been doing LTE-only), the watch did update yesterday to R815USQU1BRJ6.
                                                                                                      • Unregister then re-register the watch with DIGITS. This is more than de-associating and then reassociating the watch with the phone number in DIGITS.

With those changes, I can go back to bluetooth connection between phone and watch with messages synchronizing, while not getting duplicates when switching to LTE. So far so good for two days, which did include a watch software update. I will indeed follow up if things stop working.

I don't think this is ready to be considered solved, as the steps taken for my watch are similar but different enough from what it sounds like worked for dupsla. Also, it took a good deal of discussion to get from the general support to the DIGITS team; this might of course vary between callers and who is on both ends, but it would be good to make this issue more findable to the support teams. Until a clear, reproducible path to making this work is demonstrated, I would suggest this not be considered solved.

                                                                                                        • magenta6596678

The original issue of duplicate messages hasn't come back when switching to LTE, so major step forward. As before, I don't think this can be called solved until a reproducible process is in place. In that direction, how do I PM my ID to you?

Also, I'm not sure if the current update solves the independent line issues, detailed nicely by magenta6898941.

Even though I'm not a t-mobile user I was experiencing the same issue as everyone else with receiving duplicate txt messages from my watch that I dismissed hours ago whenever my watch would switch to mobile data. And I discovered  (at least on AT&T) that this has to do with the text app you're using and Numbersync (AT&T's equivalent service for DIGITS).

I use the textra app on my phone instead of the built-in messages app. However, I decided to disable textra and then use messages. When I started digging through the settings I noticed that the messages app on my AT&T branded note 8 has a service for AT&T message sync (allows you to check and send text messages online with your AT&T phone number and must be enabled to use numbersync)

                                                                                                                So I tested by

                                                                                                                1) Sending myself a text message from another number

                                                                                                                2) Dismissing the text on my watch while still connected to bluetooth

                                                                                                                3) Waiting for 5 minutes and then disconnecting bluetooth

                                                                                                                4) Waiting for 10 minutes and confirmed my watch no longer received a duplicate notification

I went back to my phone switched my default message app back to textra and executed the same steps above and within 5 mins I received duplicate messages again. When I reached out to AT&T support they told me that their message sync service only works with the default texting app on my phone and not 3rd party texting apps. This obviously is not the answer I wanted to here since textra is far better than the samsung messages app so I kept trying things and found a workaround that works for me.

I leave textra as my default app but I went into the samsung wearables app and blocked notifications from the default message app. I then ran the test again and no duplicate messages. I only get the notification from textra. I also tested to make sure I would still receive new txt messages by connecting to mobile data only and then sending myself a message and sure enough I only receive notifications from textra now.

                                                                                                                Hope this helps

After 3 days between TMobile and Samsung, i have some concrete info finally. It's NOT a resolution, but it is an explanation. The initial duplicate messages issue, where i was also registering answered calls as missed calls even when connected to Bluetooth, was resolved following a full reset on the watch and, i suspect, completely setting up my Samsung account on both devices. It also stopped putting all my group messages into separate threads once reconnecting to LTE. Even on LTE, the phone and watch syncs remotely as long as both have signal. But thru LTE, ONLY the notification panel is synced.

That brings up a separate issue. Phone calls and text messages received while the watch is on LTE are treated as independent from the main phone line. That's why connecting to LTE floods the watch with a backlog of text messages. If the watch software is working correctly it will put them into their respective threads and not show as unread on the watch face or notification panel, but does show as unread within the messaging app itself. Why? Because it received them as messages to the independent watch line itself, not as a mirror (like thru Bluetooth). This is the same reason why, when connected to LTE, calls answered on the phone show as missed on the watch - it's registered as a missed call to the WATCH line. As an example, if (while on LTE) you don't answer a call on either the watch or the phone, then your watch registers 2 missed calls at exactly the same time. 1 missed on your watch line and 1 missed on your phone line. If you clear the missed call notification on your phone, then you'll automatically clear one of the notifications on your watch, the one reflected from your phone. Vice versa works also, if you clear the correct missed call on your watch relating to the missed call on your phone it will clear the notification on your phone. But you cannot clear notifications to your independent watch line from your phone. The same thing is happening with text messages.

Basically, phone calls and text messages are not data features, they're line level features and are forwarded to the watch thru DIGITS. There is currently no ability to sync remotely the messages or phone calls thru DIGITS. In fact, AT&T is currently the ONLY carrier capable of this with Android thru it's NumberSync service. Apple watches don't have this issue because everything is proprietary and they manage their devices directly (in essence). For Android, it's dependant on the service providers sharing service.

Again, currently AT&T is the only one able to sync calls and messages remotely, as well as have your message replies delivered as if from the main phone's number. I asked TMobile Advanced Troubleshooting about it and they said they've requested information on that specifically but have not gotten a response. It could be that it's in the pipeline but they haven't been told anything about it at all, so it could just be the way it is.

And that kind of stinks. I'm usually connected via Bluetooth and on the occasion I'm out of range, my watch starts buzzing for 10 minutes straight with all my spooled messages. And even though it doesn't use the notification panel, it still shows them as unread in the watch messaging app. Plus, if i reply from my watch, it comes from a different number and doesn't post to my phone. Additionally, ten minutes of constant buzzing kills your battery before you're even out the gate! Switching LTE on & off manually, only when you know you'll need it, could prevent unnecessary LTE switching (because you walked across your apartment or something and out of Bluetooth range), but for that i start to wonder the value of the more expensive LTE watch plus a monthly service cost. If you have to actively avoid the LTE, then it's kinda self-defeating.

I'll be asking TMobile if they'll honor the BOGO special if i suspend DIGITS until there's a fix, but i have a feeling they'll say no   . This was VERY long, sorry but hope it helped.

I have not changed the settings from before. And now, my watch turned off because it said it needed to cool down. anybody else with similar issue?
