Getting Charged More on Kick Back

I am on Kick Back, which I understand will no longer be offered. Anyway, I exceeded my 2GB of data the other month under the Kick Back terms, and while i understand I don't get the discount, I was charged an extra $10. Not what I was expecting on TMobile One when I have unlimited data. How can I be on unlimited data and get charged extra because I exceeded a limit? Now I'm worried because I'm traveling over seas on vacation and bit more on business overall. Can someone explain why this occurred and how do I either cancel it or prevent it in the future? A big reason I switched from AT&T to TMobile was to avoid charges like this on an unlimited data plan. Perhaps I didn't fully understand the Kick Back program to begin with (and perhaps this is why they are discontinuing).
