It's great that you've come from AT&T to T-Mobile. You've come at a great time!
What have you done since receiving the phone from your son? Have you changed any of the settings? There are a few settings that should be changed in order to fully experience the T-Mobile network. If no one has changed these settings- this may be what's causing your current problem.
T-Mobile has a great guide for those who transition from a different carrier onto the T-Mobile network here. I suspect you'll have to edit the APN's (Access Point Name) in order to get your data up and running like it should be. You can find the link directly to that guide here.
