It is possible that there could be an issue with the phone but we can totally prove that with a simple SIM swap. Are you able to take the SIM from the J3 and pop it in your S8 and see if the S8 continues to have an issue with automatically regaining data connectivity?
Testing the SIM in another phone is a great suggestion. Have you tried it out to see if it's working in the other phone? Please let us know. Thanks.
