Messaging apps like Skype, Viber, Hangouts and I presume WhatsApp use data. Some also send texts. I can't name any that make phone calls.
Let me ask you a question. What phone are you planning to take? Some T-Mobile phones have only 2G international bands and suffer the same sort of data issues abroad that 2G-only phones suffer domestically.

I agree that whatsapp will count towards you data when you use it overseas. Keep in mind, the unlimited data is for the 2G connection. You'll also wanna check out our international page to make sure the device you're taking will be able work in London. Just search the country first, then you'll have the option to check your phone's compatibility.

magenta2519045 - I've tried making calls with Signal, Hangouts and WhatsApp. They all work fine. From Europe, there is a slight delay, but it is workable. Also if you can get on WiFi at all all of those apps will work just the same as using your 2G data (or 3G data if you have One Plus International), maybe even slightly better if the WiFi is a good connection.
