Oh man, that sounds very frustrating! I have has similar issues with a 3rd party app. Have you tried clearing the data on the application? This will reset the app settings back to default and can usually fix issues like this. Don't worry though it will not erase your messages just the app settings!
I installed the latest update and that seems to have resolved the issue.
