The Contacts app probably wouldn't gain you much of anything by sending the data to the SD card (unless you have a gabillion contacts.. and I mean that literally). You can't send the actual app piece to the SD card since it's an internal app.
If you're looking to back up in order to restore to a different device, put all your contacts in the Google Cloud (create them as Google contacts) and when you get a new Android device, log in with the same account on this device and they'll transfer.

I do agree with smplyunprdctble about using Google to back up your contacts. It's a great way to store and transfer contacts form device to device.
