Depends. It has to be cooked into the OS. Some phones have it and some don't. You can't add it in except by flashing firmware from a version that does.

1 of 1 people found this helpfulIt is really up to the manufacturer to decide if they want to do it or not. The code for Wi-Fi calling was made own source a while back. Google even has it built into their own devices. For volte, they can decide to build that in but the manufacture needs to have it certified by the fcc to allow it to be sold that way. And the manufacturer would need to support and pay for all of that.

While that's true, you still have the case that some manufacturers (e.g. Samsung) so tailor their firmware that the same model phone sold by one carrier may be largely incompatible with another carrier. I can't believe that this is all on Samsung and that the carriers don't have a hand in it. I credit Apple for at least resisting this more than Samsung.

It's $$$. The unlocked version of the S8 for example works on T-Mobile for everything(except Digits). Samsung knows there is money on it, and they also know having carrier packages allows them to make more money upfront before a device is sold. Samsung if they wanted to can do what they want how they want, but again that upfront money is too good to pass up. Imagine if all carriers ended up paying $25 per device due to packages that Samsung offers.
Sell 25M devices = $625M. The iPhone 7 has 2 models and they don't do the same thing, and interloping is not 100% between the two devices. Oh and that flex policy which drives me nuts. You can't tell the difference unless you know the IMEI.

1 of 1 people found this helpfulHey, btblender!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but neither of those features will work on your device. VoLTE on Android is only available on the devices listed here. As far as WiFi calling goes, you may find more helpful information here.
I think your question is more of why is this not possible and other users on this thread have done a great job of providing different reasons.

Thanks for the input. It's unfortunate that this and other great devices will never see those two features of the network. Perhaps one day Sony will spend the money necessary to get their phones placed with carriers in the US. I can't be the only one bored with the same Samsungs and iPhones again and again...

I got myself the HTC U11, and Moto Z Force 2 or whatever it's called this past week.
They have wifi calling, and all the carrier stuff for T-mobile except Digits Integration.
Sony will never do it because they made a deal with Verizon, and then renigged on it. Now due to that there were penalties that Sony has to abide by. One of them is the fingerprint reader being disabled on their US devices, and possibly can't have carrier models for X number of years. No one knows what the agreement was, but this is the phone that may have caused Sony change how they do things

Actually the fingerprint sensor was disabled in the us because hp has a patent on a fingerprint sensor built into the power button on the side of the phone, sony didn't want to pay the fees so they disabled it

Negative ghost Rider whomever told you that is wrong. Even Sony CEO says it was a poor deal they had and it wasn't a deal with HP.

So explain how it works overseas?
Two different entities even if they bare the same name, and 2 different countries. Different agreements as well. As I mentioned above Verizon can't force certain types of deals internationally, but can here in the states. The Z4V was a real thing and advertised. As soon as Sony pulled out a lot of things changed for them in the states. Sony even eluded to an agreement they had as to why some things were lost in the states.

Why T-Mobile does not enable the carrier bundle for this phone here in the United States is beyond me. I was so disappointed the day I had to return this amazing device because of this issue.

There are no carrier bundles for android the way there is for Apple phones. So they can't even if they wanted to. The manufacturer needs to build it in.

T-Mobile does sell the phone overseas. I wonder what the difference is?

Well it is a different carrier. T mobile I different countries is not the same company. Not sure about now, but they also used to have different frequencies. Their offered services are definitely different.

What's funny is that they both are very blaming each other. Sony says it's T-Mobile that disabled the feature and vice versa. It just doesn't make sense to me. I pop in my T-Mobile Sim into my Oneplus 5 and VoLTE works like it should.

One Plus put the code in AND let T-Mobile test it to make sure there is no bad effects to their network.
Sony chose not to do the same as to why it didn't. Sony finally caved in a did it with their newest device, but don't expect them to do it with older devices. Even Google, Samsung, and Apple didn't do it with their older devices.
