S8+ WiFi speeds less than impressive

smokindog

I recently moved us to T-Mobile and picked up 2 new S8+ phones on the BOGO rebate via Costco.  Great deal!  Really like them for the most part but I've noticed there are issues with the WiFi.

My old phone was an ASUS Zenfon2 with an Intel Atom.  If I run a speedtest, it gets the same speeds/ping time that my laptop gets on my home WiFi (Frontier 100+/- by 100+/-, ASUS RT-AC68 running ASUS-Merlin [latest]).  However the S8+ (both of them brand new with all available updates) only gets about 2/3 to 3/4 the speed with a longer ping time than the old phone and the laptop.  I've tried it multiple times and at various times of day over the past couple weeks.  All devices are connected to the same AP using the same server for the Speedtest.  Both phones using the Speedtest APP and the PC via speedtest.net and Chrome..

I read someplace that there is a WiFi patch.issue being worked for the S8 but can't find the article again.  The only work arounds I find are to do a factory reset and/or wipe the cache partition.  Since these are new phones and both have the same behavior, I'm not going that route!!!

    Any thoughts?

Re: S8+ WiFi speeds less than impressive

Hello there and welcome! This is a new one for me -- I hadn't heard of a WiFi patch for the S8/S8+ and didn't see any known issues for either version when it comes to WiFi, but getting decent speeds is important! I did a little digging online and did find a pretty long thread on Samsung's support site about intermittent WiFi connectivity issues, but it looks like those were resolved with an update this summer, and seemed to be more with staying connected than overall speed.

We know what to expect when it comes to our own Broadband Internet Access Services but when you're connected to your ISP it's a little hard to say what could be happening. Do you have any other devices, aside from your old ASUS phone or your laptop, that you could test to compare speeds? Have you had a chance to test either of the S8+ devices on another WiFi network to see if they seem to have a better experience?

Yes, multiple laptops/desktops and other friends phones.  All hit speeds faster than BOTH S8+ devices.  It's got to be something with the S8+

Re: S8+ WiFi speeds less than impressive

It's a bummer that the S8+ devices aren't getting the same speeds as the other equipment you've tested. Internally, we don't have a way to file a ticket for slow internet on WiFi; we'd refer you to your ISP. I also totally recognize that completing a reset on new equipment feels odd -- really, a master reset and operating in safe mode are the easiest way to determine if a device's functionality is caused by a third party app. The only other general troubleshooting step I'd recommend, other than the reset/cache wipe, are doing a double check to make sure your S8+s have up-to-date software: Software updates: Samsung Galaxy S8+.

That said, if you've noticed this across multiple WiFi networks, this is something I'd recommend reaching out to Samsung directly regarding, to see if they have any tips on ways to maximize your speeds or feedback regarding the speeds you're getting. Maybe there is another WiFi patch in the works and the thread I found was unrelated to the one you remember seeing? I'll keep an eye out here for any other threads regarding slow WiFi speeds on this device here, for sure!

Is you network IPv6?  If it is then one thing I notice some Samsung devices are bad with IPv6 and switching to a hybrid Ipv6/4 network actually improves speeds.

                Nope, I've got IPv6 disable!

Re: S8+ WiFi speeds less than impressive

And while you're getting 185/19 on your S8+, what are other devices on your network getting????  That's the original question.  Why does the S8+ consistently get lower numbers than all other devices on the network (and it's BOTH S8+ phones we own that get the same lower numbers).

Re: S8+ WiFi speeds less than impressive

Why would you refer me to my ISP, it's not their issue.  It's the S8+ that is not performing.  I've got two of them performing the same, both worse than other devices.  I can also set up a test internally with my server netting the same results.  The S8+ WiFi performance has issues.

With respect to the reset issue.  BOTH these phone were new out of sealed boxes.  The initial tests were not impacted by any secondary apps and now that I have them configured they behave exactly the same as new.

I'm finding it difficult to believe that TMobile has no way to file a report with Samsung.  You folks control the software releases.  Additionally, what are you doing to resolve the recently announced security bug in the WPA2 protocol?

Re: S8+ WiFi speeds less than impressive

Sorry if my reply was confusing! Since there are so many variables from one home internet set-up to another (your plan, router, etc) and issues could be related to either the ISP or the WiFi set-up, which we can’t investigate, WiFi speeds aren't something we're able to file a ticket for on the internal system that we use to report issues. When it comes to network speeds, that's a whole different ballgame and we're able to report a host of issues to our engineers, because they can examine and test the network, compare speed reports, check equipment, and rule out variables to get to the root cause.

That said, from all of the comparison testing you've done with your own equipment, it sounds like you're really seeing a difference! When the manufacturer is made aware of issues like these, they work with us to provide us a list of known issues and either workarounds, fixes, or information on when necessary software updates will be provided. The manufacturer creates the software updates, modifies things here and there for each carrier when applicable, and then we push the updates when they're ready. We don't have known issues listed for WiFi on these devices right now, but there may not be enough reports at this point for them to be aware. I can pass this thread and your feedback about the WiFi speeds on your S8+ to a contact we have who works exclusively with Samsung equipment (but for T-Mobile) to be forwarded to them, but we also typically recommend reaching out to the manufacturer directly in case they know something that we don’t. Did you have a chance to check your software version? It helps to be able to provide that detail. Are there any troubleshooting steps you've taken so that we can pass that information along as well?

Regarding the WPA2 vulnerability/Krack exploit, I know many are concerned and security is important to us. Device manufacturers are developing and rolling out patches for this WPA2 protocol vulnerability. While we don't have timelines to offer, we do have a few suggestions and details to bear in mind in the interim. It's important to note that this vulnerability only affects WiFi routers and connected devices through 802.11, and attackers would need to be within Wi-Fi range to take advantage of this vulnerability. If Wi-Fi is disabled on your device, there is no issue. While manufacturers are developing patches, here are some suggestions for avoiding the threat:

                        • Don't use public Wi-Fi

                        • Update devices with the latest software or turn on auto updates if optional. Since we can't say which equipment will receive updates first; it's important that all equipment be updated as soon as patches are available.

                        • When possible, connect over encrypted channels such as HTTPS or VPN.

                        • Use a wired connection if that's an option.

Also, I know you mentioned that you’re using an ASUS router – a user on another thread provided a link that might be interesting to you! If your router is the RT-AC68U then I think, like the TM-AC1900, that it's not affected by the vulnerability inrouter and AP mode. Otherwise, they are working on patches, and hopefully it won't be long! Hey, smokindog -- just wanted to check in and see if you were still with me! I know my last reply was a novel, sorry if it was too much to wade through!
I'd love to grab your software version and any troubleshooting details from you to pass on to our Samsung expert if I could. Thank you!
