Re: When using WiFi, 4G LTE icon flashes every few seconds, draining battery.. seems to be after nougat update. Using S7 edge

1 of 1 people found this helpfulEven on WiFi, phones connect for split seconds to cellular data to check for updates, messages, emails, location info, "find my phone" features, etc.... The icon flashing isn't draining your battery. The new update takes a few days to settle in. Best course of action is to reset the phone to factory state, but since most people refuse to do that stating it's such a hassle, they have to deal with the battery life issue until it resolves over time.

I do realize the icon itself isn't draining the battery; however, the phone accessing cellular data every 4 seconds is definitely draining my battery. If I turn off cellular data and use wifi or if I use cellular data and no wifi , battery life is unaffected. I believe i even lose upwards of 2% per hour when I'm sleeping, unless I turn wifi off.
I had the update for days prior to the issue starting and I've had the issue for more than a few days now. Battery was unaffected prior to the issue.
Ironically, I was just about to do the dreaded factory reset when I saw your reply. Many people are having the issue, some even said it came back after factory reset.
I might give it a go and see how it goes.
Did you have this issue and it resolved on it's own over time ?

The battery drain I have seen on many phones over the years after major OS updates. It works itself out though...at least for me on Motos, LGs, Samsungs, and HTCs.

Interesting..
I've never had a viable battery drain after an update.. but I've had some updates that had issue wherein I needed to apply a technical fix to address the battery drain.
I've gone ahead and done the factory reset and haven't added back all my apps, just the essentials.. going to take time and slowly add back.. will keep you posted.

Thank you for checking up on me.
So, my phone has been running great since the factory reset. I've kept from installing many unneeded apps and will add what I need hesitantly over time.
Unfortunately, the issue now happening on my wife's S7 edge. Her battery has plummeted and she was even afraid of being without it, as the battery was quite low and the charger wasn't charging the battery much. She requires it as she drives our children around and runs her errands. She was able to charge it by turning it off. Once I got home and had a look at it, I saw the icon quickly appearing and disappearing. Unfortunately, she did a factory reset on it just prior to the android update for other issues.. looks like she may need to go through the hassle again. Until then, I'm trying to help her manage by keeping wifi off unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the update! Yeah, it might be best to do another reset on her phone now that the update has been installed on her phone.

Hey pno! Just wanted to check in with you and see if you'd tried another reset and how you're doing with your battery life. Another user identified an issue within location settings that resolved it for him - this doesn't sound exactly like what you're seeing, but I though it couldn't hurt to share! Can you take a look at this: Battery life after Nougat and let us know if those settings (in the screenshot towards the bottom) are enabled or off on your devices?

Thank you Marissa for reaching out!
The settings you referred to (Improve Accuracy) seem to only be applicable to GPS / Location and it's activity. The issue occurs regardless of the status of GPS.
My wife isn't yet ready to deal with the hassle of another Factory Reset, so I implemented a workaround of having wifi turn itself off when her phone isn't in use (during 'sleep'):
settings-connections-wifi-advanced-Keep wifi on during sleep - OFF
This way the battery drain is only when she's on wifi and using the phone.
It's been ~8 days now and my the problem does persist for her, so it doesn't appear to be something that just resolves itself, or at least not quickly.
Thank you!
Will keep you posted.

Actually, it's not 'OFF', but 'Never'

1 of 1 people found this helpfulHello all,
An update... for my wife, the issue did appear to go away for a short while, then unfortunately it did come back.
My wife just went ahead and did the factory reset, which should have resolved the issue, as it did for me.
Thank you and God bless!

Has anyone found a solution to this? My wifi icon is twitching to the network icon every few seconds. I will go to bed at night and my phone will almost dead. I don't have the location services on, or apps running in the background. I wiped the partition and all of this started after I factory reset my device.
I'm getting frustrated because I live for Phoenix on Friday from Buffalo and the last thing I want is a useless phone.

I am having the same problem. if I turn off wifi all is well but otherwise I see the 4g icon flash every 4ish seconds and battery life is garbage. Im on a S7. Ive tried all of the workarounds other than the factory reset. I don't feel that as an end user I should have to do all of this, but I definitely do not feel like I should have to deal with a full factory reset. What a pain..... But seeing as Im being pushed into a corner I fear I may have to. I might try going into a Tmobile store front and give them a chance to help. As a 13+ year customer, I really hope to come to resolution. Tmobile usually does take care of me.

I have the same problem, caused by an update, and nothing will fix it. Not even factory reset. Please trust me when I say I've played with every setting there is. Included advanced options for system apps. There's too much that I've tried to even list. Anyone know a solution? Other than ultra-power saving mode! Switching to this mode makes it great, but I don't much care for the reduced functionality. This has been a problem since late Sept /Oct. Whenever that update was. The most recent Nov update did nothing to fix it. If anything, made it worse.

Has anyone found a solution? This problem recently started on my S5 and battery life seems to be worse for it.
Even when connected to wifi, the 4Glte icon data transfer icon appears every 4 seconds. It does not appear if I turn on wifi calling and set it to connect over wifi only or i disable data in airplane mode.
