Text to speech

Set up & turn on

To set up and use text to speech, follow these steps:

 

Set up

Note: If you are using Text to speech in English, this language is already installed and available to use.

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Language and input.
  4. Tap Text-to-speech output.
  5. Tap the desired TTS engine to select the engine:
    • Samsung text-to-speech engine
    • Google Text-to-speech Engine
  6. Next to the desired search engine, tap the Settings settings icon.jpg icon.
  7. Tap Install voice data.
    Note: For the Samsung text-to-speech engine, the desired language may already be downloaded. Therefore, 'Install voice data' may be unavailable and you can skip to step 10.
  8. Next to the desired language, tap Download or the Download icon.
  9. When the language has downloaded, tap the Back key.
  10. Tap Language and then tap the desired language.

Turn on TalkBack

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap TalkBack.
  5. Tap the Talkback Switch to On. The Switch moves right and turns green. 

Turn on Driving Mode

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Language and input.
  4. Tap Text-to-speech output.
  5. Tap the Driving mode Switch to On. The Switch moves right and turns green.

 

 

Settings

Text to speech reads messages out loud, allowing you to listen to text or messages instead of reading them. To change text to speech settings, follow these steps:

 

Text-to-speech

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Language and input.
  4. Tap Text-to-speech output.
  5. Tap Speech rate and then adjust how fast the text will be spoken.
  6. Tap Driving mode to adjust Driving mode settings.
  7. Tap the Settngs settings icon.jpg icon next to the desired TTS engine (Samsung or Google).
    Note: To tap the Settings settings icon.jpg icon, the TTS engine must be selected.
  8. Tap Language to adjust the spoken language.
  9. Tap to adjust any other desired settings.

 

TalkBack

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap TalkBack.
  5. Tap Settings.
  6. Tap to adjust the desired settings.

Write a text message (SMS) with voice

To write and send a text message (SMS) using voice commands, follow these steps:

 

Samsung keyboard

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Messaging.
  3. Tap the Compose icon.
  4. Choose one of the following options for entering the message recipient:

    • Tap the Contacts contacts icon.jpg icon to select one of your contacts. To the left of the desired contact, tap the check box to select the check box. Tap Done.
    • Tap the Enter recipient field and enter the recipient's phone number.

  5. Tap the Enter message field.
  6. Tap the Microphone key located two keys to the left of the Space key.
    Note: If the Microphone key is unavailable, touch and hold on the key located two keys to the left of the Space key and then tap the Microphone icon.

  7. Speak the desired text.
    Note: To change the language, tap English (US), tap Add more languages, tap Automatic to clear the check box, and then tap the desired language(s) to select the check box(es). When finished tap the Back key to return to the keyboard and then tap the Microphone key again.
  8. If necessary, tap the Keyboard icon or else tap the Back key and then tap the message field again to return to the keyboard.
  9. When finished, tap the Send email send icon.jpg icon.

Swype keyboard

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Messaging.
  3. Tap the Compose icon.
  4. Choose one of the following options for entering the message recipient:

    • Tap the Contacts contacts icon.jpg icon to select one of your Contacts. To the left of the desired contact, tap the check box to select the check box. Tap Done.
    • Tap the Enter recipient field and enter the recipient's phone number.

  5. Tap the Enter message field.
  6. Tap the Microphone key.

  7. Speak the desired text. You will be automatically directed back to the keyboard when you stop speaking.
  8. When finished, tap the Send email send icon.jpg icon.
