Voice commands & functions: BlackBerry Q10

Text to speech

Set up & turn on

  1. On the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap Screen Reader.
  5. Tap the Screen Reader switch to enable.
  6. Tap Continue on the confirmation message.
  7. Tap the screen twice to start using the Screen Reader.

 

 

Settings

  1. On the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap Screen Reader.
  5. Choose from the following settings:
    • Enable Screen Reader using Triple Tap
      Turn on the BlackBerry Screen Reader by quickly pressing the power key three times.
    • Confirmation Message
      Show a message to confirm you want to turn on the BlackBerry Screen Reader.
    • Dark Screen Mode
      Enable or disable Dark Screen Mode (10% Brightness)
    • Volume
      Adjust the volume of the Screen Reader.
    • Pitch
      Adjust the pitch of the Screen Reader.
    • Speed
      Adjust the speed of the Screen Reader.
    • Verbosity
      Adjust how much of the screen is read.
    • Silent on Calls
      Silence the Screen Reader when on a call.
    • Keyboard Echo
      Have the Screen Reader read back what letters you typed in.
    • Screen Reader Language
      Choose the language the Speed Reader reads in.

Voice commands

Open an app

To open apps using voice commands, follow these steps:

 

  1. Navigate to Home screen 2 and tap Voice Control.
  2. When the microphone icon appears on the screen, speak Open + [name of app].

 

 

Voice dial a contact

To use voice dialing to call a contact, follow these steps:

 

  1. Navigate to Home screen 2 and tap Voice Control.
  2. When the microphone icon appears on the screen, speak Call + [name of contact] + [number type] (for example, "at work").

 

 

Write a text message (SMS) with voice

To write and send a text message (SMS) using voice commands, follow these steps:


Using Voice Control

  1. Navigate to Home screen 2 and tap Voice Control.
  2. When the microphone icon appears on the screen, speak Text + [name of contact]. If necessary, tap the contact's number. You can also speak Text + [speak a phone number].
  3. When the 'Compose SMS' window appears, speak your text message.
  4. Tap Send.

 

Using Text Messages

  1. Navigate to Home screen 1 and tap Text Messages.
  2. Tap the Compose icon.
  3. Enter the recipient's phone number or tap the + icon to select a contact.
  4. Tap the Enter a message field.
  5. Press and hold the 0 key (which also contains the microphone icon).
  6. Speak the desired text message.
  7. If necessary, tap Done.
  8. Tap the Send icon (envelope).
