Software update: Google Nexus 4

Learn how to check the software version and see official versions for the Google Nexus 4.


Beginning September 8, the Google Nexus 4 received a software update to Android version 5.1.1 / LMY48M available via Over-the-Air (OTA) pull down over Wi-Fi only. This update will be available over cellular network at a later date and provides features and improvements:

Check the software version

To check the current software version, follow these steps:


  1. From the Home screen, tap All Apps.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Scroll down to 'SYSTEM,' and then tap About phone.
  4. Read the version on the device, and check it below:

  • Review the Requirements to update below.
  • Beginning September 8, you may be prompted to update automatically (OTA).
  • To manually update after September 8, see how to download the update below.

If the update fails, contact customer care.

Other versions

Your device has non-T-Mobile software, and it is unsupported. The manufacturer and T-Mobile cannot update your software.

To be able to update to the current software version, the below requirements must be met:

  • LMY48I
  • 50% or higher battery life
  • Data connection
  • Available memory (File size of update: 7.6 MB)

To check for updates and download the update from the Google servers, follow these steps:


  1. From the Home screen, tap All Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap About device.
  4. Tap Software update.
    • If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, you may receive a prompt to connect.
    • If Wi-Fi is not available, tap OK.
    • If the update is not available, you will receive the message The device is up-to-date. If you receive this message, please wait for your device to receive the update via OTA.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts.
  6. Wait as your device restarts and updates to Android version 5.1.1 / Software version LMY48M.
