Supported T-Mobile networks

T-Mobile supports various wireless network technologies, as described below. It's important to use a device capable of the network type you desire, and be in a location that has cellular network coverage.

4G LTE network

T-Mobile's advanced 4G LTE network is smoking fast! With incredible speed, you can do more using our nationwide 4G LTE network and our expanded capacity. 4G LTE delivers up to 50% faster speeds then 3G.

4G LTE

LTE requirements:

  • Location must have 4G LTE coverage. (check coverage)
  • Device must be approved for support of LTE bands listed below. (check the device Tech Specs)
  • SIM card must be 4G LTE capable. Most T-Mobile SIM cards are LTE capable.

 

Frequencies: Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz), Band 12 (700 MHz), Band 66 (Extension of band 4 on 1700/2100 MHz), Band 71 (600 MHz)

  • Band 2 (1900 MHZ) details:
    • L1900 is being used primarily to update our current 2G towers to LTE.
    • Many of our current LTE devices already support L1900 band 2.
  • Band 12 (700 MHz) Extended Range LTE details:
    • This is also referred to low-band spectrum. It adds increased building penetration and covers greater distances. In metro areas, this improves in-building coverage, and in rural areas it improves our LTE footprint.
  • Band 66 (1700/2100 MHz)
    • This is an extension of Band 4. This means it includes Band 4, and additional ranges.
    • In coverage maps, this appears the same as Band 4 coverage.
  • Band 71 (600 MHz)
    • This is low-band spectrum, like our 700 MHz. It adds increased building penetration and covers greater distances. In metro areas, this improves in-building coverage, and in rural areas it improves our LTE footprint.
    • Coverage is starting to roll out in rural markets first throughout 2017. To expand coverage faster, band 71 is being added first in places that do not already have other low band (700 MHz) spectrum.
    • The first phones planned to support band 71 are from Samsung and LG, in late 2017.

 

Voice over LTE (VoLTE)

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) allows you to place and receive calls on our LTE data network. Phone calls are connected with a clear and rich experience. You never know when you might need to check Facebook while talking to your mom and sharing your Mobile Hotspot with your friends. All of this is possible on our amazingly fast 4G LTE network. Here's some of the highlights:

  • Browse the web with speed while on a call.
  • Place a call and connect twice as fast.

 

4G (HSPA+)

With 4G, theoretical maximum download speeds range from 21 Mbps up to 42 Mbps. You can take advantage of incredibly fast download speeds, and even use voice and data services at the same time.

 

Frequencies: Band 2 (1900 MHz), Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz)

 

3G (HSPA)

With 3G, there is a theoretical maximum download of 14 Mbps. With 3G, you can use voice and data services simultaneously.

 

Frequencies: Band 4 (1700/2100 MHz)

 

2G (GSM, GPRS, and EDGE)

EDGE, our enhanced 2G service, delivers a theoretical maximum download speed of 236 kbps. GPRS, our 2G service, delivers a theoretical maximum download speed of 114 kbps. Typical speeds are between 35 kbps and 45 kbps. Keep in mind, voice and data services cannot work simultaneously when on GPRS or EDGE.**

Data speeds vary depending on its operating system, processor, battery life, running applications, peak theoretical speeds, and distance from the cell site. USB laptop sticks almost always offer higher speeds than smartphones, because they use the power of a laptop with larger batteries, processors, and other technologies. Also, downloading information is faster than uploading. There is no way to predict an exact speed with so many factors affecting your experience.

 

*Not all LTE frequencies are available in all T-Mobile coverage areas.
