Data usage

Overview

Before you check data usage, review the following information:

The Networks application (Connection Manager) and the Task Manager allows you to monitor your approximate data usage.

The amount of data transferred is measured in either kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), or terabytes (TB).

The amount of data transmitted or received depends on the type of files accessed:

  • Text files typically use relatively small amounts of data.
  • Graphics files and music files typically use larger amounts of data than text files.
  • Video files use very large amounts of data.

Your usage amount varies depending on how often you use the network and the type of information you transmit and receive.

The type of data plan you have determines how much data you can transfer before incurring additional charges.

Example: If you are on a 5GB plan, any data transmission over the 5GB limit will incur additional charges.

Open Task Manager (Observe application data usage)

You can use the Task Manager to observe which applications are using the most data. To open the task manager and the Application history tab, follow these steps:

  • From any screen, press the Windows Mobility Center more settings icon.jpg button.
  • Click Task Manager.
  • If necessary, click More details.
  • Click the App history tab.
