Text to speech: Google Pixel 4

Use these steps to use text to speech to have messages read out loud on the Google Pixel 4.

 

 

 

Set up

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up to view your apps.
  2. Tap Settings > Accessibility > Select to speak.
  3. Tap the switch next to Use Select to Speak to turn on or off.
  4. Tap Settings to turn the following options on or off:
    • Read in background
    • Read text on images

 

TalkBack settings

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up to view your apps.
  2. Tap Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack > Settings.
  3. Modify the following settings as needed:
    • Text to speech settings
    • Verbosity
    • Use proximity sensor (on/off)
    • Shake to start continuous reading
    • Speak passwords (on/off)
    • Vibration feedback (on/off)
    • Sound feedback (on/off)
    • Sound feedback volume
    • Audio ducking (on/off)
    • Automatically scroll lists (on/off)
    • Single-tap activation (on/off)
    • Show context menu as list (on/off)
    • Gestures
    • Selector
    • Keyboard shortcuts
    • Custom label
    • Explore by touch (on/off)
    • Enhanced focus (on/off)
    • Open TalkBack at the Play Store

Text to speech settings

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up to view your apps.
  2. Tap Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output.
  3. Tap the Settings gear next to Preferred engine.
  4. Modify the following settings as needed:
    • Install voice data
    • Use Wi-Fi only (on/off)
    • Amplify speech volume (on/off)
    • Intonation
    • Number processing (on/off)
    • Language detection
    • Anonymous usage reports
    • Feedback

 

Turn on TalkBack

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up to view your apps.
  2. Tap Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack.
  3. Tap the switch next to Use TalkBack to turn on or off.
