eSIM settings: Apple iPhone on iOS 12

Learn how to use dual SIM with an eSIM on the Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR device running iOS 12.1.1 or later.

Set up your cellular plan with eSIM

One of your cellular plans will use the nano-SIM and the others will use the eSIM. The eSIM is provided by T-Mobile or another carrier, which will be stored digitally on your iPhone. To activate an additional cellular plan, you can scan the QR code given by the other carrier, download a carrier app for activation, or enter the information manually. T-Mobile has it's own app, T-Mobile Prepaid eSIM app.

Use a carrier app

For steps to activate prepaid service using T-Mobile's app, see T-Mobile Prepaid eSIM app.

  1. Go to the App Store and download the carrier app.
  2. Open the app and use it to purchase a cellular plan.

Scan a QR code

Use these steps to scan a QR code and download your eSIM settings. You must contact your carrier to activate service first.

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Use your iPhone camera to scan the QR code.
  4. If you're asked to enter a confirmation code to activate the eSIM, enter the number provided with the QR code.

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Add Cellular Plan.

To switch which eSIM is active, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings > Cellular > Cellular Plans.

View how much signal each line has

When you have both the SIM card slot and the eSIM active, you'll see slightly different bars of signal. One line will have the normal bars of signal and the other line will have dots of signal just below. When you swipe down to view the Control Center, you'll see each line with bars of signal and the carrier name to help you identify which is which. Check out the screenshots below.

Choose your default line for voice, messages, and data

You can set your default line, which iMessage and FaceTime use. Your iPhone will also use the default line when you call or send a message to someone who isn't in your Contacts app. Or you can choose to use one line for cellular data only and use your default line for calls and messages.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings > Cellular > Default Line.
  2. Choose from the following options. [Plan Label] will be whatever name you choose for your lines.
    • Use [Plan Label] as your default line: If you select this option, this line will be used by default for voice, SMS, Data, iMessage, and FaceTime. Your other line will only be available for voice and SMS.
    • Use [Plan Label] for cellular data only: You might want to select this option if you're traveling internationally and you want to keep default line for voice, SMS, iMessage, and FaceTime. This will allow you to use this plan for data only.
