First-time use: Apple Watch on watchOS 4

After turning on your device the first time, you may see a setup wizard to help you set up your Apple watchOS 4 device.




First-time use

  • You can pair one Apple Watch to your iPhone at a time.
  • To use your Apple Watch series 3, you'll need to pair it with an iPhone 6 or later running the latest version of iOS.
  • To use your Apple Watch series 1 or 2, you'll need to pair it with an iPhone 5s or later running the latest version of iOS.
  • Make sure you iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network and Bluetooth is turned on.


To turn on Bluetooth and pair with a headset or other device, follow these steps:


  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. On the Watch, choose your language using the Digital Crown or swiping.
  3. Tap Start pairing on the Watch, then on the iPhone.
  4. Hold the Watch in front of the iPhone camera, centered in the square, until you see the message Your Apple Watch is Paired.
  5. On your iPhone, tap Set Up as New.
  6. If you’ve set up once before, you can tap Restore from Backup on your iPhone and follow onscreen steps.
  7. Pick a wrist by tapping Left or Right on your iPhone. Then read terms and conditions and tap Agree to continue.
  8. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  9. Review the Usage and Diagnostics, Location Services, and Siri settings. If you change the settings of these services, those changes will apply to both of your devices.
  10. On your iPhone, choose whether to make a passcode for your Apple Watch. You'll need a Passcode for features like Apple Pay.
  11. If you tap Create a Passcode or Add a Long Passcode on your iPhone, you'll be asked to make a personal code using your Apple Watch and decide whether it will unlock with your iPhone.
  12. Tap Install All to sync iPhone apps that work with Apple Watch.
    • Only apps that are compatible with Apple Watch will sync.
    • Tap Choose Later to sync only basic information like Mail, Contacts, and Messages.
  13. Your iPhone and Apple Watch will begin to sync.
    • The length of this process varies depending on the amount of data you're syncing.
    • Keep your devices close together until you hear a chime and feel a gentle tapping sensation from your Apple Watch.
  14. For Apple Watch with cellular, you'll be prompted to follow the On-device Activation (ODA) steps below.


On-device Activation (ODA)


  • After completing the first-time use process or when changing a SIM, you'll be prompted to go through on-device activation (ODA).
  • To manually start this process, on the iPhone open the Watch app and tap Cellular > Add a New Plan.


Purchased through T-Mobile

  1. Review the 'Thanks for using T-Mobile screen', then tap Next.
  2. On the Activation screen, tap Next to finish setting up DIGITS on the Apple Watch.
  3. The Apple Watch has now been set up with DIGITS, tap Close to complete the activation.


Purchased anywhere other than T-Mobile

  1. Make sure the device was purchased in the U.S. International models won't work in the U.S.
  2. If the device was originally used with another carrier, you must complete a master reset to release the EID.
  3. Review the 'Thanks for using T-Mobile screen', then tap Next.
  4. At the 'Account Confirmation' screen, enter the last 4 digits of the primary account holder's SSN, then tap Next.
  5. Select your data with paired DIGITS plan.
  6. Review the plan summary, then tap Next.
  7. Review the terms and Conditions, then tap Next.
  8. Review the Service Agreement, then tap Next.
  9. Tap Close to return back to the main screen.


SIM swap:

  1. On the 'Thanks for using T-Mobile' screen, tap Next to continue. DIGITS will recognize that there is already an existing data paired with the DIGITS line.
  2. Select the number assigned to the previous device that you want to activate on the new Apple Watch, then tap Next.
