T-Mobile Sidekick 4G: Help and Support

By now you probably know all there is to know about your device, but if not, we've got you covered with some basic info below.

 

Starting April 6, 2019, this device may show incorrect locations or continuously search when attempting to use GPS due to the GPS Rollover. There’s no fix available, so if you need to use applications or services that rely on GPS technology, it just might be time to say your farewells and get a new device. Back up and restore

 

Back up apps

  1. From the Home screen, press Menu.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Privacy.
  4. Check Backup my data.

 

Back up contacts

To back up your contacts, follow these steps:


Back up to your Samsung or Google account

  1. From the Home screen, tap Contacts.
  2. If necessary, tap the Contacts tab.
  3. Tap the Menu key.
  4. Tap the desired option:
    • Merge with Google
    • Merge with Samsung account
  5. Tap OK.
  6. If necessary, log in to your Google or Samsung account.
  7. Follow any additional prompts.

 

Back up to your SD card

  1. If necessary, insert your SD card.
  2. From any Home screen, tap Contacts.
  3. If necessary, tap the Contacts tab.
  4. If necessary, tap the Menu key, tap Contacts to display, and then tap All contacts.
  5. Tap the Menu key and then tap Import / Export.
  6. Tap Export to SD card.
    The pop-up window will display the file name for the contact list. If necessary, record the name of the file before tapping OK.
  7. Tap OK.

 

Back up media & pictures

 

Using computer - PC

  1. Connect USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
  2. If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tapMedia device to select the check box.
  3. On the computer, click the Open device to view files using Windows Explorer folder or else navigate to and open the phone’s disk drive and navigate to the desired folder.
  4. Navigate to the desired files on your device. The Card icon is your SD card and the Phone icon is your device's internal storage.
  5. Drag and drop the files into the desired computer folder.
  6. When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer.

 

Using computer - Mac

  1. If necessary, navigate to samsung.com/kies, click DOWNLOAD FOR MAC OS and follow the prompts to download the Kies software.
  2. Connect USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
  3. If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tapMedia device to select the check box.
  4. On your computer, open Kies.
  5. Inside Kies, click the Back up / restore tab.
  6. If necessary, click the Backup tab.
  7. Next to 'Music' and 'Photo,' click the check box to select the check box.
  8. If you would like to back up all of your files, click the check box next to 'Select all items.'
  9. Click Backup.
  10. When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer

 

 

Restore apps

  1. If necessary, log into your Google.
  2. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Google and then tap Sync all.
  5. Tap the Back key.
  6. Tap Backup and reset.
  7. Check/uncheck Backup my data.
  8. Check/uncheck Automatic restore.

 

Restore contacts

  1. If necessary, log into your Google or Samsung account.
  2. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Google or Samsung.
    Note: If you backed up your contacts to your Google account, then tap Google for step 3. If you backed up your contacts to your Samsung account, then tap Samsung for step 3.
  5. Tap your email address at the top of the screen.
  6. Tap Sync contacts to select the check box. If the check box is already selected, then tap Sync now.=

 

Restore media & pictures

To restore backed up media and pictures, follow these steps:

 

Using computer - PC

  1. Connect the USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
  2. If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tapMedia device to select the check box.
  3. On the computer, click the Open device to view files using Windows Explorer folder or else navigate to and open the phone’s disk drive and navigate to the desired folder.
  4. Navigate to the desired folder or location on your device. The Card icon is your SD card and the Phone icon is your device's internal storage.
  5. Drag and drop the backup files on your computer into the desired folder inside your phone.
  6. When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer.

 

Using computer - Mac

  1. Connect the USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
  2. If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tapMedia device to select the check box.
  3. On your computer, open Kies.
  4. Inside Kies, click the Back up / restore tab.
  5. If necessary, click the Restore tab.
  6. Next to 'Music' and 'Photo,' click the check box to select the check box. If available, click the check boxes next to any other categories you would like to restore.
  7. If you would like to restore all of your files, click the check box next to 'Select all items.'
  8. Click Restore. If necessary, follow any additional prompts.
  9. When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer.

 

 

Reset your device

A master reset restores the original factory settings and may delete your personal data on the internal storage, such as downloads, ringtones, images, apps, contacts, and Visual Voicemail. It doesn't delete data stored on the SIM card or SD card.

 

Master reset with settings menu

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory.
  2. Back up all necessary data and synchronize files.
  3. From any Home screen, press the Menu key.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap Privacy.
  6. Clear the Back up my data check box. If this check box is selected, the settings that caused problems before may return.
  7. Tap Factory data reset.
  8. Read the message about erasing data.
  9. Tap Reset phone.
  10. Tap Erase everything.

 

Master reset with hardware keys

If the device menus are frozen or unresponsive, you can master reset using hardware keys.

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory.
  2. Back up all necessary data and synchronize files. See: Back up & restore
  3. Turn off the phone. If the phone is unresponsive and does not turn off, remove the battery and then re-insert it.
  4. Hold down the Volume Up + Volume Down keys and Power key simultaneously.
  5. When the Samsung logo appears on the screen, wait a few seconds, the Android system recovery screen will appear and release the keys. Timing is key, if you do not release the keys at the right moment, the phone will restart and you will need to begin again.
  6. Press the Volume Down key to select Delete all user data when the Android master reset menu appears.
  7. Press the Power key to confirm your selection.
  8. Press the Volume Down key to select Yes – delete all user data.
  9. Press the Power key to confirm your selection.
  10. Press the Power key to select reboot system now.

 

 

Memory and SIM cards

 

SIM card - Insert

This device supports a standard size SIM card.

  1. Lift the back cover to remove it.

  2.  Remove the battery by lifting it out of the compartment.

  3.  Turn the SIM card so the gold contacts face down and the notched end is pointing away from the slot. Slide the SIM card into the SIM card holder.

  4.  Insert the battery by aligning the gold contacts on the battery with the gold contacts inside the phone. Lower the battery into position.

  5.  Press the back cover onto the phone until it snaps into place.

 

SIM card - Remove

  1. Lift the back cover to remove it.

  2.  Remove the battery by lifting it out of the compartment.

  3.  Slide the SIM card out of the SIM card slot.

  4.  Insert the battery by aligning the gold contacts on the battery with the gold contacts inside the phone. Lower the battery into position.

  5.  Press the back cover onto the phone until it snaps into place.

 

Memory card - insert

To insert or remove the SD card, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the battery cover by placing your fingernail in the release latch opening and lifting the cover off the device.

  2.  Align the memory card with the gold contacts facing down.

  3.  Slide the memory card into the memory card slot until it clicks into place.

  4.  Press the back cover onto the phone until it snaps into place.

 

Memory card - remove

  1. Remove the battery cover by placing your fingernail in the release latch opening and lifting the cover off the device.
  2. Push the memory card in until it clicks and pops out slightly.
  3. Slide the memory card out of the memory card slot.
  4. Press the back cover onto the phone until it snaps into place.

 

 

Network settings

 

Change band

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wireless and network.
  4. Scroll to and tap Mobile networks.
  5. Tap Network Mode.
  6. Tap WCDMA only to use a 3G / 4G connection only.
  7. Tap GSM only to use a 2G connection only.
  8. Tap GSM / WCDMA (Auto mode) to use a 4G connection when available.

 

Manual network selection

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wireless and network.
  4. Scroll to and tap Mobile networks.
  5. Tap Network operators.
  6. Tap Search now.
  7. If prompted, tap OK to disconnect data services.
  8. Scroll to and tap the desired network.

 

Turn on/off data roaming

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wireless and network.
  4. Scroll to and tap Mobile networks.
  5. Tap Network operators.
  6. Tap Search now.
  7. If prompted, tap OK to disconnect data services.
  8. Scroll to and tap the desired network.

 

APN settings

  1. From the Home screen, press Menu.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Wireless & networks
  4. Turn off Airplane Mode or Flight Mode
  5. Tun on Mobile Network (if available)
  6. Touch Mobile Networks.
  7. If you see the following check boxes, turn them on:
    • Use Packet Data
    • Data Roaming
    • If the customer is roaming off the T-Mobile Network; turn on Data Roaming This will incur charges if you roam internationally, but it is required to receive data when roaming domestically.
  8. Touch Access Point Names or APNs.
  9. If available, tap the T-Mobile US APN (the bullet point fills with green). If not available, tap the Menu key, and then tap New APN.
    Note: To reset your APN settings, tap the Menu key and then tap Reset to default.
  10. Verify and update the following settings for the Data APN:
    • Name: T-Mobile US LTE
    • APN: fast.t-mobile.com
    • Proxy: <Not set>
    • Port: <Not set>
    • Username: <Not set>
    • Password: <Not set>
    • Server: <Not set>
    • MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
    • MMS proxy: <Not set>
    • MMS port: <Not set>
    • MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
    • MCC: 310
    • MNC: 260
    • Authentication type: <Not set>
    • APN type: <Not set> OR Internet+MMS
    • APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
    • APN roaming protocol: IPv4
    • Enable/disable APN: <greyed out unless there are multiple APN's>
    • Bearer: Unspecified
  11. Tap the Menu key.
  12. Tap Save.
  13. Tap the desired APN profile you want to use. The bullet point fills with green next to the APN profile.
