Text to speech: Samsung Galaxy S9

Use these steps to use text to speech to have messages read out loud on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

 

 

 

Set up

If you are using text to speech in English, this language is already installed and available to use.

 

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > General management > Language & input > Text-to-speech.
  3. Select the desired TTS engine:
    • Samsung text-to-speech engine
    • Google Text-to-speech Engine
  4. Next to the desired search engine, tap the Settings icon.
  5. Tap Install voice data.
    • For the Samsung text-to-speech engine, the desired language may already be downloaded.
    • However, you have the option of downloading a higher quality version.
  6. Next to the desired language, tap Download or the Download icon.
  7. Wait as the language downloads. It may take a few minutes.
  8. Tap the Back key.
  9. Tap Language to select the language.

 

TalkBack settings

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Accessibility > Vision.
  3. Tap Voice assistant.
  4. Tap the VOICE ASSISTANT slider to turn on.
    • This enables your Accessibility settings.
    • You can also enable your Accessibility settings by pressing the Home key 3 times in quick succession.
  5. Tap SETTINGS, then tap to adjust the following:
    • Speech volume
    • Text-to-speech
    • Pitch changes
    • Read keyboard input aloud
    • Speak while screen off
    • Mute with proximity sensor
    • Shake for continuous reading
    • Read caller ID aloud
    • Phonetic alphabet
    • Usage hints
    • Vibration feedback
    • Sound feedback
    • Focus on speech audio
    • Sound feedback volume
    • Large cursor
    • Cursor color
    • Quick menu
    • Manage custom labels
    • Keyboard shortcuts
    • Status bar information
    • Developer options

 

Text to speech settings

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > General management > Language & input > Text-to-speech.
  3. Move the Speech rate slider to adjust how fast the text will be spoken.
  4. Tap the Settings icon next to the desired TTS engine (Samsung or Google).
  5. To tap the Settings icon, the TTS engine must be selected.
  6. Tap Language to adjust the spoken language.

 

Turn on TalkBack

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Accessibility > Vision.
  3. Tap Voice assistant.
  4. Tap the VOICE ASSISTANT slider to turn on.
