Over The Air (OTA) updates

Software update is not supported: T-Mobile G1

How to download Over The Air (OTA) updates

The device automatically updates its software using over-the-air (OTA) updates. You cannot perform a software update manually. When new software is available, the device displays a prompt asking you to update the system.

When you see a prompt for a software update, perform one of the following actions:

  • To update the software, tap Install now. The update may take 5-10 minutes to download. After updating, the device restarts automatically.
  • To wait and update at a later time, tap Install later. You normally receive another reminder 6-24 hours later.

There are two kinds of software updates:

  • Simple patch: This only patches software bugs and features, and it does not reset the device.
  • Full software update: The full software update resets the device and removes settings or applications you have stored. The update warning will warn you if information will be erased. If you lose any applications from Android Market, you can download them again at no cost.

The newest software version is Android 1.6. Some of the updates include the following:

  • Search updates. The update makes it easier to search various sources, such as browser bookmarks, history, contacts, and the Web directly from the home screen.
  • Battery screen. A new battery usage screen shows which applications and services are consuming battery.
  • Integrated cameras. The camera, camcorder, and gallery allows you to switch between still and video capture mode with touch screen switch.
  • Voice search. The update provides faster response and deeper integration with native applications, including the ability to dial contacts.
  • Android Market. The update makes it easier to discover great applications.
  • Fixed issues with the device rebooting after dialing 911.

Notes:

  • The device does not lose any information when downloading this update.
  • T-Mobile and Google cannot push a software update to individual devices. It is an automatic process. If a customer inquires about missing a software update, please see Over The Air (OTA) Update.
  • If the customer is in a 2G market while downloading the update, any incoming calls may forward to voicemail.
