Text to speech: Sony Xperia Z

Use these steps to use text to speech to have messages read out loud on the Sony Xperia Z.

 

 

 

Set up

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to 'SYSTEM,' and then tap Accessibility.
  4. Under 'SYSTEM,' tap Text-to-speech output.
  5. Under 'PREFERRED ENGINE,' select one of the following options:
    • Google Text-to-speech Engine
    • Pico TTS
  6. Next to the desired search engine, tap the Settings icon.
  7. Tap Install voice data.
    Note: For Pico TTS, the desired language may already be downloaded. Therefore, 'Install voice data' may be unavailable and you can skip to step 10.
  8. Next to the desired language, tap Download.
  9. When the language has downloaded, tap the Back key.
  10. Tap Language, and then select the desired language.

 

TalkBack settings

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to 'SYSTEM,' and then tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap TalkBack.
  5. Tap the Talkback switch to turn on.
  6. Tap Settings.
  7. Adjust the available settings as necessary.

 

Text to speech settings

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to 'SYSTEM,' and then tap Accessibility.
  4. Under 'SYSTEM,' tap Text-to-speech output.
  5. Tap Speech rate, and then select the desired option.
  6. Tap the Settings icon next to the desired TTS engine.
    Note: To tap the Settings icon, the TTS engine must be selected.
  7. Tap Language, and then select the desired language.
  8. Adjust other available settings as necessary.

 

Turn on TalkBack

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to 'SYSTEM,' and then tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap TalkBack.
  5. Tap the Talkback switch to turn on.
