Stopping network abusers FAQs

Find answers to commonly asked questions about T-Mobile's efforts in stopping network abusers.

What is the T-Mobile ONE Fair Usage Commitment?

T-Mobile ONE includes unlimited Smartphone Mobile HotSpot data at up to 3G speeds. And customers can add ONE Plus International to get unlimited Smartphone Mobile HotSpot data at up to 4G LTE speeds.

On all T-Mobile plans, during congestion, the small fraction of customers using >50GB/mo. may notice reduced speeds until next bill cycle due to data prioritization (updated quarterly; you can view the latest number here). For the small fraction of customers using >50GB/mo. data usage must be on your smartphone.

Why is T-Mobile doing this?

We’re protecting America’s fastest 4G LTE network for the vast majority of our customers. If left unchecked, the actions of those who tether in violation of this policy could eventually have a negative effect on the experience of all T-Mobile customers–we don’t want that to happen.

Are you monitoring the content I’m accessing?

We don't monitor content you're using or accessing. To prevent against misuse and protect the experience of all our customers, we do monitor traffic volume and patterns across our network.

If this program is to ‘protect the customer experience’, why is it applied broadly to users who exceed their Smartphone Mobile HotSpot limits, instead of just limited to traffic during times and places of network congestion?

These customers are going out of their way to use a whole lot of tethered data–more than their plan is intended to provide. T-Mobile’s Fair Usage Commitment protects America’s fastest 4G LTE network for the 99.99% of our customers that use it in accordance with their plans.

Are Pay in Advance (Prepaid) or MetroPCS users also impacted?

No, not at this time.
