Software update: Motorola CLIQ

Prepare for the update

This software upgrade is intended for MOTOROLA CLIQ with MOTOBLUR owners who want to upgrade to Android™ 2.1 (Eclair) software with enhanced MOTOBLUR. You must have your phone connected to your computer via a cable to carry out this upgrade.


Since this new software adds new features and functionality to your phone, we recommend that you review the Things To Know FAQ, that outlines the new functionality with the upgrade. In addition, we also recommend reviewing the Release Notes and User manual - Motorola CLIQ before deciding to upgrade.

Once you have decided to upgrade, please read the instructions in each of the above five steps thoroughly. There are minimum requirements to install this software as well as changes to your user data and settings that you should review.


Phone Requirements


  1. A fully charged MOTOROLA CLIQ with MOTOBLUR with an active SIM card.
  2. A Motorola USB cable.
      Note: This cable came in the box with your MOTOROLA      CLIQ with MOTOBLUR and also serves as your charger. You can detach it from      the charging adapter to use it as a USB cable.
  3. A microSD card installed in your phone with approximately 100 MB of free      space.
  4. To see the available storage card space, perform the following steps:
    1. From the Home Screen of your phone, pressMenu,then selectSettings.
    2. Scroll down the screen, then touch SD card & storage.
    3. The total and available storage card space display in the SD card section


Internal Phone Storage space


To make room for the exciting new features in this upgrade, your internal phone storage will be permanently reduced by approximately

15 MB. Therefore, you need at least this much space available to perform it.


To see the available internal phone storage space, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Home Screen of your phone, press Menu, then select Settings.
  2. Scroll down the screen, then touch SD      card & storage.
  3. The total and available storage space display in      the Internal phone storage section.

Software Version Requirements


You must be on the latest version of Android 1.5 (Cupcake) software with the latest version Blur_Version.1.4.8.MB200.T-Mobile.en.US or higher before you can upgrade. Please read the following steps to confirm or update your current software version.

Check Your Current Software Version


  1. From the Home Screen of your phone, press Menu, then select Settings .
  2. Scroll down and select About Phone.
  3. Under System Version, your current version is displayed.
    • If your version does not match this, please follow the instructions in (Update to Blur_Version.1.4.8.MB200.T-Mobile.en.US) below to update to the latest Android 1.5 (Cupcake) software version, otherwise proceed to the Download the software section.


Update to Blur_Version.1.4.8.MB200.T-Mobile.en.US

Although not required, it is recommended to perform the following steps over WiFi for a faster connection.

  1. In the About Phone menu, scroll up and selectSystem Updates.
    • After a couple of minutes, your phone will confirm an update is available.
  2. On the Update Available message,      select Download.
    • The download progress of the update will      appear in your phone's notification bar.
  3. Once the download is complete, an Install      Update message will appear.
  4. Select Install Now to immediately begin installation.
  5. When the update is complete, your phone will      automatically power on to the home screen.
  6. Repeat steps 1-4 until your phone reports that      your software is up to date. Once up to date, you can proceed to the Download the software section.

Before proceeding, please check the box below acknowledging that you have read and fully understand Step 1on device, software requirements and the key considerations below.

  1. Download  the file and save to your computer as "".
  2. Make a note of the location where the file is saved on your computer.
  3. The file can be saved on your PC or directly on the microSD Card.


Key Considerations


Motorola has developed this upgrade to provide an enhanced experience for CLIQ owners with new features and improvements to existing features. However with the additional software included on the phone, some users may experience slower operation of some phone functions.


  • Instant Messaging: The Instant Messaging login information will not be preserved so please record its information.


  • Android Market™ Applications and Data: Android Market applications that you have previously downloaded will be preserved. However, Motorola does not guarantee that all of these applications will be compatible with the new software


  • Home Screen Widgets: Since we have added new resizable widgets, not all of your current widgets can be restored to their original location. You may need to re-add them after the upgrade.


  • Settings: System settings, such as Ringtone, Volume, Display, Security, and Wallpaper will not be preserved. You will need to reset them after the upgrade.


  • Bluetooth and WiFi Connections: Bluetooth and WiFi connections that are setup on your device will be preserved. However, some Bluetooth devices may need to be unpaired and then repaired if they are not connecting properly after the upgrade. Some WiFi connections may also need to be deleted and re-added


  • Contacts: Your contacts will be preserved. However, since we have enhanced our contact shortcuts, any current contact shortcuts on the home screen will need to be re-created after the upgrade. You will also have to re-link previously linked contacts after the upgrade.


Connect your phone to your computer

Windows XP/ Windows 7

For Windows XP/windows 7 Users:


  1. Ensure your phone screen is unlocked.
  2. Connect the USB cable to your desktop and your phone.
  3. Your phone will beep (normal mode) or vibrate (silent mode).
  4. The USB icon wil appear in the notification bar at the top of your phone screen.
  5. In adition, a "USB Connected" dialogue will appear for a short time.
  6. Tap the USB Drive message or, if you miss the message, tap and pull down the notification bar at the top of the screen and tap the "Ongoing" part of the screen and the "USB connected" dialogue from there.
  7. The drive will appear under My Computer as a Removable Disk.


Drag and drop the software

On your computer, go to the location where the software was downloaded.

  1. Identify the file called "".
  2. Drag and drop the "" file onto your microSD. It must be at the top level of the microSD card --      it cannot be in a sub-folder.
  3. Wait until copying is done.
  4. To unmount your SD Card from PC and Turn Off USB Drive option on device.
    1. From the Home Screen of your phone, press Menu, then select Settings.
    2. Scroll down the screen, then select SD card & storage
    3. Select Unmount SD card
    4. Unplug your USB cable from your phone.

Note: If your microSD card does not have sufficient space, the software package will not copy and you will need to install a microSD card with more space. In order to copy the upgrade to your device, you will need at least approximately 100 MB of SD Card memory available. Install the software


Make sure your battery is fully charged so that you don't run out of power during the upgrade process.


  1. From the home screen, press Menu, select Settings,
  2. Scroll down and select About Phone.
  3. Select System Updates.
  4. After a couple of minutes, your device will confirm the update is available.
    • The Copy prompt will appear.
  5. Select Copy
    • The Install Update prompt will appear.
  6. Select Install Now.
  7. Your device will power off and display installation progress.
  8. It will then power up and stay on the carrier logo for up to 10 minutes before powering on to the home screen.
  9. Please do not interrupt this process. When the update is completed, your device will be restarted one last time.

Perform the following steps on your device to restore your accounts and settings

Select START on your device to begin the initial setup process and restore      your accounts.

  • Your BLUR login information will be populated for you.
  • You will need to re-enter your Google login information.
  • Once you are finished with the initial setup, it will take several minutes for all of your account data to be restored to your device.
    • System Settings: Please reset your desired Ringtone, Volume, Display, Security, and Wallpaper settings
    • Contacts: Re-link any previously linked contacts and also recreate any contact shortcuts on your home screen
    • Application Shortcuts: Restore any shortcuts or widgets to your new home screen.
    • SD Card Data: If you deleted data from your SD Card to perform this upgrade, you may now transfer it back.

Note: When your update completes successfully, delete the "" file from your SD card. This is important for your ability to receive future updates.
