BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows

BlackBerry Desktop Software makes it easy to access, sync and organize your content, such as music, photos, and information, between your BlackBerry device and your Windows computer.

 

System requirements

  • BlackBerry Device Software 4.2 and up, excluding BlackBerry 10.
  • Intel® compatible 1 GHz or higher processor
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • USB 1.1 or higher USB port
  • Screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater
  • 100 MB of free hard disk space for typical installation
  • Windows® XP SP3 or later, Windows Vista®, Windows 7 or Windows 8
  • Microsoft® .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or an active Internet connection
  • iTunes version 7.7.1 or later, or Windows Media® Player version 10 or later, for music synchronization

 

 

Steps

Download and install

  1. On your computer, go to t-mobile.com/bbupgrade.
  2. Find BlackBerry Desktop Software and select get software.
  3. Select Download it Today.
  4. Choose Yes or No depending on if you want to receive information about BlackBerry products.
  5. Select Download.
  6. Once the file has completed downloading, open it and select Run to launch the install wizard.
  7. Follow the on-screen prompts as your PC installs the new Desktop Software.
    • Select you language.
    • Select your country.
    • Accept the License Agreement.
    • Select the folder where you want to install the Desktop Software
  8. If you want to create a shortcut for the Desktop Software, make sure the box is checked and then select Install to begin the installation process.
  9. Once it has finished installing, select Finish.

 

Backup and restore data

  • Backup data to a computer
    1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
    2. Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable.
    3. In the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Device.
    4. Click Back up.
    5. Perform one of the following actions:
      • To back up all data, click Full Backup.
      • To back up all data except e-mail messages, click Quick Backup.
      • To select which types of data to back up, click Custom Backup and select the checkboxes next to the desired data. See KB03974 for information on specific databases.
    6. If desired, you can change the following settings:
      • To save files on your memory card, click Files saved on my built-in media storage.
      • To change the default name for the backup file, click in the File name field and type a new name.
      • To change the folder where the backup files is saved, click Change then click Yes. Browse to the desired folder and click OK.
      • To encrypt your data, select the Encrypt backup file checkbox and type a password.
      • To save your settings so that you aren't prompted to set these options again, select the Don't ask for these settings again checkbox.
    7. Click Back up.
    8. Click Close once the backup is complete.
  • Restore data from a backup file
    1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
    2. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
    3. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Device.
    4. Click Restore.
    5. Select the backup file you want to use.
      Note: To restore data from a backup file that is not listed, click Change and navigate to the .bbb file or .idp file.
    6. Perform one of the following actions:
      • To restore all data, click All device data and settings.
      • To select which data you want to restore, click Select device data and settings and select the checkboxes for the desired data. See KB03974 for information on specific databases.
    7. To restore data to built-in media storage, select the Files saved on my built-in media storage checkbox.
    8. If the backup file is encrypted, enter the password.
    9. Click Restore.

 

Migrate data to new device

  1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  2. Connect the old BlackBerry device with all the information to the computer using the USB cable.
  3. Click Device on top left side of the Desktop Software window.
  4. Choose Switch Devices.
  5. Choose the old BlackBerry device from the list.
  6. Check the box next to the information you wish to migrate:
    • Data
    • Third party applications
  7. Click Next.
    Note: Screen will display "Backing up your current device data. Do not disconnect device."
    • When prompted, connect the new BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable.
    • Click Next.
    • Choose the new BlackBerry device from the list
      Note: Screen will display "Transferring your data to your new device. Do not disconnect your device."
      • When finished the Desktop Software will alert you to disconnect the device

       

      Setup calendar / contact synchronization

      1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
      2. Connect your BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable.
      3. Click Organizer.
      4. Click the Configure Settings button.
      5. Select an application and click Setup.
      6. Select a desktop organizer application and click Next.
      7. Select synchronization options and click Next.
      8. If applicable, select Microsoft Outlook options, and click Next.
      9. Click Finish.
      10. Repeat steps 4 through 8 for the remaining BlackBerry smartphone organizer applications.
      11. Click OK to close the Select Device application window.
      12. Ensure that at least one type of organizer data has the check box is selected, and then click the Sync button.

       

      Add or remove applications / languages

      1. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
      2. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable.
      3. On the top left hand side, click Applications.
      4. To install built in applications or languages, scroll to and click the Plus icon to install that application or language.
      5. To install 3rd party applications:
        1. Click Import files at the top right hand side of the screen.
        2. Navigate to the application you want to add.
        3. Select the [application].alx file.
        4. Click Open.
        5. Verify that the application displays in the Handheld Application Selection list.
      6. To remove an application or language, click the X beside the application or language.
      7. Click Apply at the bottom right hand corner.
      8. Wait for the Updating Applications screen to complete.
        • During the installation the device may reboot.
      9. When finished, verify the application appears in the list of installed applications.

       

      Update Device Software

      Note: For the easiest steps to upgrade, reload, or downgrade device software, see Online software updates: BlackBerry.

      1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
      2. Connect your BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable.
      3. On the home screen of the BlackBerry Desktop Software, click Update.
      4. Choose from the following:
        • To keep a backup file of your smartphone data and settings, select the Back up your device data checkbox.
        • To encrypt your backup data, click Encrypt backup file.
        • If you want to receive an email when an updated version of BlackBerry Device Software is available, select the Keep me subscribed to email notifications checkbox and enter your email address.
      5. Select Install update.
        Note: Do not disconnect the device while it is being updated as it could make the device unusable. The update process can take over 30 minutes.

       

      Reload / install device software

      Note: For the easiest steps to upgrade, reload, or downgrade device software, see Online software updates: BlackBerry.

      1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Software.
      2. Connect your BlackBerry device to the computer using the USB cable.
      3. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Device.
      4. Select Update My Device.
      5. Select View other versions and choose the software version you wish to reload.
      6. Choose from the following:
        • To keep a backup file of your smartphone data and settings, select the Back up your device data checkbox.
        • To encrypt your backup data, click Encrypt backup file.
        • If you want to receive an email when an updated version of BlackBerry Device Software is available, select the Keep me subscribed to email notifications checkbox and enter your email address.
      7. Select Install update.
        Note: Do not disconnect the device while it is being updated as it could make the device unusable. The update process can take over 30 minutes.
