Master reset: HTC Wildfire S

Learn how to master reset the HTC Wildfire S through the menu or hardware keys.

Master reset from settings menu

A master reset restores the original factory settings and may delete your personal data on the internal storage, such as downloads, ringtones, images, apps, contacts, and Visual Voicemail. It does not delete data stored on the SIM card or SD card.

To perform a master reset, follow these steps:

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory. See: Back up & restore.
  2. From any Home screen, tap the Menu Menukey.png key.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Privacy.
    • Important: Turning off Back up my settings and Automatic restore may prevent issues from reoccurring after performing the master reset.
  5. Tap the Automatic restore check box to clear (turn off) automatic restore.
  6. Tap the Backup my settings check box to clear (turn off) automatic backup.
  7. Tap the Back backkey.png key.
  8. Tap SD & phone storage.
  9. Scroll to and tap Factory data reset.
  10. Tap Reset phone.
  11. Tap Erase everything.

Master reset with hardware keys

A master reset restores the original factory settings and may delete your personal data on the internal storage, such as downloads, ringtones, images, apps, contacts, and Visual Voicemail. It does not delete data stored on the SIM card or SD card.

If the device menus are frozen or unresponsive, you can master reset using hardware keys. To perform a master reset, follow these steps:

  1. Back up all necessary data and synchronize files. See: Back up & restore.
  2. If the phone is plugged into the charger or USB cable, unplug it.
  3. Remove the battery.
Important: Removing the battery is required. Turning off the phone with the Power key does not work, if the Fast Boot feature is enabled.
  4. Re-insert the battery.
  5. Press and hold both the Volume Down key and the Power key. Hold the keys for at least 3-5 seconds, and continue to step 6 without releasing them.
  6. When the three Android images appear on the bottom of the screen, release the Power key first, and then release the Volume Down key. The following options display:
    • FASTBOOT
    • RECOVERY
    • CLEAR STORAGE
    • SIMLOCK
      • Note: If you are stuck on a screen that says 'HBOOT' and 'FASTBOOT' without any other options to choose from, it means you have pressed the Back button. To get to the regular options, press either the Power key on HBOOT or the Back button.
