Learn how to format the SD card and manage files using the SD card, internal storage, and a computer.

 

 

 

 

Format SD card

 

Formatting the SD card deletes all data on it. You may wish to format the SD card if you want to delete the files, if files or apps on the SD card are not working, or if the SD card is not working.

 

To format the SD card while inserted in the device, follow these steps:

 

  1. Plug the device into a computer with a USB cable.
  2. From the Notification bar, verify that Disk Drive or Mass Storage mode are selected.

  3. On the computer Start menu, navigate to Computer or My Computer.
  4. Find the Removable disk located under devices with removable storage.

  5. Right-click the removable disk.
  6. Click Format.

  7. Verify the file system is set at FAT32 and Quick Format is selected.

  8. Click Start.
  9. Wait a few minutes for the computer to format the SD card.
    Note: If errors appear during this process, the SD card is likely defective.

 

 

Insert / remove SD card

 

To insert or remove the SD card, follow these steps:

 

  1. Remove the back cover using the notch located on the top edge of the phone.
  2. Adjust the memory card so the gold contacts are facing down.
  3. Slide the memory card into the memory card slot, as shown.

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu Menukey.png key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap SD & phone storage.
  4. Tap Unmount SD card.
  5. Remove the back cover using the notch located on the top edge of the phone.
  6. Slide the memory card out of the memory card slot.

 

 

Open / delete files

 

Open or delete files using the computer

To open or delete files on the SD card using a computer, follow these steps:

 

You must use the USB cable that comes with your phone.

 

  1. Connect a USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
  2. On your phone, tap Disk drive.
  3. Tap Done.

Note: Some applications may stop running or may be unavailable until you change the connection type or disconnect from the computer.Your phone is now mounted as a disk drive on the computer.Proceed with the following steps based on the computer’s operating system: Windows

  1. In the Removable Disk pop-up window, double-click Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

  2. Double-click to open the folder(s) on the memory card containing the files you want to access.
  3. When finished, on the computer, close the window for the phone’s disk drive.
  4. Click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon located in the system tray in the lower right-handcorner of the computer’s desktop.
  5. Click Safely Remove USB Mass storage Device.

Macintosh

  1. Double-click the virtual drive icon that appears on the desktop.

  2. Double-click to open the folder(s) containing the files you want to access.
  3. When finished, on the computer, close the window for the phone’s disk drive.
  4. Drag and drop the virtual drive icon onto the Trash/Eject icon.

 

Open or delete files using the device

To open or delete files on the SD card using the device, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications Applications.png icon.
  2. Tap Music
  3. Tap the Library icon.
  4. Tap the All songs (music notes) icon.

Photo and video files

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications Applications.png icon.
  2. Tap Gallery.
  3. Tap one of the following options:
    • Camera shots
    • All photos
    • All videos

Transfer files

 

Transfer files between computer & SD card

To transfer files and pictures between the computer and SD card, follow these steps:

 

Important: You must use the USB cable that comes with your phone.

 

  1. Connect a USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
  2. On your phone, tap Disk drive.
  3. Tap Done.
  4. Note: Some applications may stop running or may become unavailable until you change the connection type or disconnect the phone from the computer.
  5. Your phone is now mounted as a disk drive on the computer.

Proceed with the following steps based on the computer’s operating system: Windows

  1. In the Removable Disk pop-up window, double-click Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer.

  2. Double-click to open the folder(s) containing the files you want to move to your memory card.
  3. Copy and paste or drag and drop the files into the desired location on your memory card.
  4. When finished, on the computer, close the window for the phone’s disk drive.
  5. Click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon located in the system tray in the lower right-hand corner of the computer’s desktop.
  6. Click Safely Remove USB Mass storage Device.

Macintosh

  1. Double-click the virtual drive icon that appears on the desktop.

To view the amount of free SD card storage, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the MenuMenukey.pngkey.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap SD & phone storage.
  4. Under SD card, view Available space.
