Text to speech: Google Nexus 4

Learn how to use Text to speech (which reads your messages out loud) on the Google Nexus 4.





Set up & turn on


To set up and use Text to speech, follow these steps:

Note: If you are using Text to speech in English, this language is already installed and available to use.


  1. From any Home screen, tap the All apps AllAppsicon.jpgicon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap TalkBack.
  5. Tap the the TalkBack slider to turn off or on.





Text to speech reads messages out loud, allowing you to listen to text or messages instead of reading them. To change Text-to-speech settings, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the All appsAllAppsicon.jpgicon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to 'PERSONAL,' then tap Language & input.
  4. Scroll to 'SPEECH,' then tap Text-to-speech output.
  5. Under 'GENERAL,' select the following to adjust settings:
    • Speech rate
      • Very slow
      • Slow
      • Normal
      • Fast
      • Faster
      • Very fast
      • Rapid
      • Very rapid
      • Fastest
    • Listen to an example (tap to listen).
    • Default language status (tap to change default language).
  6. Tap the Settings settings+icon.png icon to modify settings as desired:
    • Language
      • English (United Kingdom)
      • English (United States)
      • French (France)
      • German (Germany)
      • Italian (Italy)
      • Korean (South Korea)
      • Spanish (Spain)
    • Settings for Google Text To Speech Engine
      • Auto-update voices (on/off)
      • Update voices over Wi-Fi only (on/off)
      • View Open Source Licenses (tap to view)
    • Install voice data
