Device Protection

Device Protection provides coverage against hardware services (mechanical breakdown), accidental damage, loss, and theft. If you already have Device Protection, and need to file a claim, find out how.


How Device Protection works

We offer several device protection plans. You can compare device protection plans to find one that best meets your needs! One option with our device protection plans is provided by Assurant and offered by T-Mobile. These plans cover the replacement of the device in the event of hardware services (mechanical breakdown) issues, accidental damage, loss and theft, even after the manufacturer's warranty expires.


You're not required to purchase Device Protection in order to activate service with T-Mobile. But, without protection, you may be responsible for the full replacement cost of your device.


You may already have coverage through homeowner’s or renter's insurance, but Device Protection would cover you before any other insurance. T-Mobile's employees are not licensed insurance agents and are not qualified or authorized to assess the adequacy of your existing coverages. Keep in mind, if you have other coverage, the deductible you'd have to pay with another insurer may be higher. T-Mobile receives compensation for services performed in connection with this program.

This plan covers the device, standard charger, standard battery and SIM card (when applicable to the device). The accessories are covered if part of the original device purchased and only in the event of the simultaneous loss or theft of both, the device and the accessory. Other accessories, routers, and netbooks are not covered. Warranty exchanges are completed by T-Mobile for device manufacturer defects that could occur within the first year of the Manufacturer's Warranty. Things to keep in mind:

  • Maximum of two approved claims within a 12-month period for claims of accidental damage, loss, or theft (Subject to your service fee/deductible).
  • No maximum on the amount of replacements for hardware service (mechanical breakdown) claims.
  • A maximum of $1,500 per claim applies.
  • Premium Device Protection includes Lookout Mobile Security® Premium for device security and protection.
  • Premium Device Protection Plus includes even more!
    • McAfee® Security for T-Mobile secures your digital life with safe browsing, antivirus/malware, lost device, identity theft, and lost wallet protection.
    • Personal Help Desk supports your connected devices like routers, game consoles, and smart TVs.
  • Your device will be replaced with a reconditioned device of like type and quality. If a reconditioned device is not available, we will replace it with a new device of like type and quality. Replacement device comes with a 6-month warranty or the remainder of the manufacturer's warranty (if longer).

  • Warranty. Every replacement device comes with a six month warranty or the original manufacturer's warranty, whichever is longer.
  • Get reconnected quickly. Once your claim is approved by Assurant, your replacement device will be shipped next business day (if available), at no additional charge.
  • Low replacement cost. You'll know exactly what you're going to pay for the replacement device, and you won't pay the full replacement cost for a device.
  • AppleCare Services. Are you an iPhone user? AppleCare Services are now included in the cost of Premium Device Protection!
    • 24/7 priority access to AppleCare award-winning technical support via chat or phone.
    • Software support for iOS, iCloud, and Apple-branded iOS apps.
    • Hardware coverage for your Apple device, battery, and included accessories.
    • Access to lower service fees: for iPhone - $29 for screen damage*, or $99 for any other iPhone accidental damage; for iPad - $49 for accidental damage*.



Enrollment must occur no later than 14 days after a purchase of a qualified T-Mobile device. You can cancel coverage at any time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you are bringing your own device to T-Mobile, you must bring your phone to a retail location for a device condition check in order to enroll in the program.

How do I check if my phone has Device Protection?

You have 14 days from the time of purchase of your qualifying T-Mobile device to enroll. To check if you have Device Protection:


From your mobile device

  1. Go to My T-Mobile and log in to your account.
  2. Select PLAN.
  3. Select View plan details.
  4. If you have Device Protection, you'll see the service in the HANDSET PROTECTION AND UPGRADES section.


From your computer

  1. Go to My T-Mobile and log in to your account.
  2. Select PLAN.
  3. If you have Device Protection, you'll see the service in the HANDSET PROTECTION AND UPGRADES section.


For New York customers only: Device Protection benefits may be purchased separately through an insurance program that offers coverage in the event of Loss, Theft, or Accidental Damage or through an extended service contract that offers coverage against mechanical breakdown.


All other states: The monthly charge covers the service contract components (mechanical or electrical breakdown and accidental damage). Coverage is provided under a Master Policy issued to T-Mobile. Customers will be the Certificate holder on T-Mobile’s Insurance Policy for loss and theft coverage benefits.

AppleCare Service claims

* Within the first two accidental damage claims, the service fee for iPhone screen damage is $29, and the service fee for iPad accidental damage is $49, when service is provided at Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and through Apple’s mail-in and repair service; for all other accidental damage claims the service fee is $99. There is a maximum of two approved loss, theft or accidental damage claims within a 12-month period, subject to your service fee/deductible. There is no maximum on the amount of replacements for hardware service (mechanical breakdown). There’s a maximum of two approved Accidental Damage claims within 24 months through AppleCare Services. There’s no maximum for Hardware Service claims within 24 months through AppleCare Services. After your AppleCare benefits are exhausted, Assurant will handle your claims.
