Sony PC Companion how-to guide

Sony PC Companion is a collection of tools and applications you can use when you connect your Sony to a computer, including content transfer, backup, restore, software reloads, and software updates.

 

 

Computer requirements

  • Internet broadband connection
  • Intel® Pentium® 4, 3.6 GHz or equivalent AMD processor
  • 5 GB free hard disk space
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 1 available USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port and USB cable
  • Microsoft® Windows XP™ SP3 (32 bit), Vista (32/64 bit) or Windows 7 (32/64 bit) or Windows 8 (32/64 bit)

 

 

Download and install

  1. Go to http://www.sonymobile.com/us/tools/pc-companion/.
  2. Click Download PC Companion
  3. Once downloaded, open the file to begin the installation.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the installation.

 

 

Backup data

  1. Open the PC Companion and connect your device to the computer.
  2. Scroll to and click Start underneath Backup & Restore. On first use, it will take a moment to start Backup and Restore.
    • Click Backup.
    • Check the desired content to back up and click Next.
    • Wait while the Sony PC Companion retrieves the phone file system information.
    • Enter a backup name and click Next.
    • Wait while the Sony PC Companion backs up the information.
    • Click OK. If not all of the information is copied over, you will see a error message and recommended troubleshooting step.

       

       

      Restore data

      1. Open the PC Companion and connect your device to the computer.
      2. Scroll to and click Start underneath Backup & Restore. On first use, it will take a moment to start Backup and Restore.
        • Select the desired phone backup file and click Restore.
        • Check the desired content to restore and click Next.
        • Wait while the Sony PC Companion retrieves the phone file system information.
        • Click Next to begin the restore operation.
        • Wait while the information is restored to the device.
        • Follow the on screen instructions and click OK.
        • Click OK. If not all of the information is copied over, you will see a error message and recommended troubleshooting step.

           

           

          Set up contacts and calendar

          1. Open the PC Companion and connect your device to the computer.
          2. Scroll to and click Start underneath Sync Zone. On first use, it will take a moment to start Sync Zone.
            • Click Next.
            • Choose the content to sync / application to sync with and click Next.
            • Enter your Google login information and click Next. This should be the same as on the device.

               

               

              Check for software updates

              Sony PC Companion is automatically set up to periodically check for software updates. If an update is available, you will be notified and walked through updating to the latest version.

               

               

              Update device software

              1. Open the PC Companion and connect your device to the computer.
              2. Scroll to and click Start underneath Support Zone. On first use, it will take a moment to start Support Zone.
                • Click Start underneath Phone / Tablet Software Update.
                • Click repair my phone / tablet.
                • Review the information on the screen and click Next.
                • Review the information on the screen and click Continue.
                • Check the box and click Next.
                • Wait while the latest software is downloaded and installed. This may take 30 minutes or more depending on the internet connection speed.

                   

                  To reload device software when the password is forgotten, following these steps:

                   

                  1. Open the PC Companion and DO NOT connect your device to the computer.
                  2. Scroll to and click Start underneath Support Zone. On first use, it will take a moment to start Support Zone.
                    • Click Start underneath Phone / Tablet Software Update.
                    • Click repair my phone / tablet
                    • Choose your device from the list. If your device is not showing, choose Another phone / tablet.
                      • Review the information on the screen, check the box, and click Next.
                      • Review the information on the screen and click Continue.
                      • Review the information on the screen, check the box, and click Next.
                      • Review the information on the screen, check the box, and click Continue.
                      • Wait while the computer prepares for the update.
                      • If prompted, choose your device model from the list.
                      • Follow the steps on the screen to connect the powered off device to your computer while holding the volume down button.
                      • When the reload process starts, you may release the volume down button.
                      • Wait while the latest software is downloaded and installed. This may take 30 minutes or more depending on the internet connection speed.

                         

                         

                        Troubleshooting

                        1. Unplug the device from the computer.
                        2. Turn the device off and on.
                        3. Turn the computer off and on.
                        4. Replug the device into the computer.
                        5. Unplug the device from the computer, then uninstall and re-install the software.
                        6. If the issue persists, contact Sony for further troubleshooting.
