Empowering young people to dream and solve challenges means a brighter future for us all. So last May, T-Mobile partnered with Ashoka to launch the Changemaker Challenge. The call to young innovators was simple: share your big ideas for positive, lasting change in your communities. Earlier this month, the leader of one of the six winning teams and a CEO favorite, J.I. of Dios del Sol, shared his journey so far with our T-Mobile Newsroom and Good Morning America, detailing his plan to revolutionize and democratize solar power across Puerto Rico.

A History with Hurricanes

656DiosDelSol.jpg

As J.I. explained to the Newsroom, the need he sees for his home island is fueled by a history of hurricane experience.

As a toddler, the '98 arrival of Hurricane George sent J.I.'s mother out into the storm searching for electricity so she could administer his asthma medication. At seven, he saw images of Hurricane Isabel making landfall and the fascination cemented.

From that point on, J.I. "followed every hurricane like a hawk," he says, "like a little weather man."

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina's quick and unprecedented strength made an impression, too. But twelve years later, when J.I. was far from home at college in DC, "Hurricane Maria hit, and that changed everything … Maria decimated our island."

Bringing Power to People

When an NPR mindfulness challenge inspired J.I. to consider solutions to Puerto Rico's debt crisis, he hit on modernizing his home island's energy grid as a source of financial relief. In the wake of the storm, watching scenes he recognized from Katrina play out in his own community, the idea took a turn, and Dios del Sol was born.

Dios del Sol aims to overhaul the island's energy distribution by leveraging places of worship and other buildings belonging to faith-based organizations to distribute solar. Too often, the needs of those injured during a storm can't be met without power, and the lives lost multiply throughout recovery as grid restoration stretches on. Dios del Sol will ultimately create a micro-grid of weather-proofed power to prepare the island for future storms. And they're testing their model right now – using his local church, which they hope to have "launching a fully retrofitted solar micro-grid by Earth Day this year and begin to bring along other nearby churches after."

Through Changemaker Challenge, J.I. and Giovanni received $10,000 to get their idea off the ground. It allowed them to build a small team, and "dare to dream and make those dreams come true." Read the full interview with J.I. on our T-Mobile Newsroom, and watch him share his vision with Good Morning America below!

The energy that the 2018 class of Changemakers brought to the world by sharing their stories and plans for the greater good isn't going anywhere -- T-Mobile will launch the 2019 Changemaker Challenge later this year. If you're a young Changemaker or know one, visit T-Mobile.com/Changemaker to sign up for a notification when the 2019 Challenge launches!

The deadly tornadoes in Alabama have been devastating for local communities, and our thoughts are with those who have lost family members, friends, and homes.

To help support those impacted by these tragedies, a T-Mobile relief truck will be in the Auburn area this week providing wi-fi and supplies such as chargers, water, non-perishable food supplies, gloves, tents, trash bags, etc. to members of the community. The truck will be located at 2807 Lee County Rd 166, Opelika, AL 36804 from Tuesday March 5th to Friday March 8th.

Hey, T-Mobile Community! Welcome to February. This chilly first month of the year that doesn't feel like an eternity (we don't miss you, January) might not always have the same number of days, but it is always home to a few holidays.

On the 13th, we celebrated the inaugural National Break Up With Your Carrier Day, a day for folks to kick loveless carriers to the curb, and yesterday was Valentine's Day, a day commonly associated with sweets for your sweetheart. We hope you had a chance to enjoy some sweetness yesterday, and participate in NBUWYCD on Twitter -- but if you missed out, no worries! We've got another holiday award to give right here in our T-Mobile Support Community!

A few days from now, another pretty rad holiday owns the calendar space – February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day -- a great day to do sweet things, just 'cause you can. The big game this year was one for the record books -- even if the records set were a little unusual. The ads, though? Touchdown!

ATLSBLIIIBlog.pngIn case you missed it, T-Mobile ran FOUR ads during the Super Bowl. We were stoked about all of them, but two were a must-see for customers. T-Mobile and Lyft announced during the Super Bowl that they've partnered to give customers a $10 Lyft this month with T-Mobile Tuesdays! AND as if that wasn't cool enough, the Un-carrier is also partnering with Taco Bell to offer customers free tacos EVERY WEEK. What's better than a Tuesday taco? A FREE taco.

Why? Because "thank you." That's why.

Un-carrier customers get thanked every week with T-Mobile Tuesdays. Maybe that's one of the reasons we're proud to serve the happiest customers in wireless! To get in on the thanking fun, just download the T-Mobile Tuesdays app for iOS or Android. Check the steps here!

Got T-Mobile Tuesdays envy? When you switch to America's best unlimited, T-Mobile pays off your carrier's annual service contract and device payments (up to $650 per line via trade-in credit and prepaid card) with trade in and a new device on a qualifying plan. That's Carrier Freedom. You're welcome.

Atlanta.jpgReal big game prep goes beyond making dip and getting out your lucky socks. T-Mobile's LTE network was already Atlanta's fastest, but now we've permanently boosted capacity by up to 8x ahead of Super Bowl LIII. The crowds of fans pouring into the city need to be able to stream, search, chat and share all they want. Atlanta residents and future visitors alike will benefit from the permanent enhancements long after this year's Super Bowl champions take home their rings.

Are you ready for some football?

No matter who you’re rooting for, if you’re on Team Un-carrier, you win. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) has expanded LTE network speed and coverage in Atlanta ahead of Super Bowl LIII, permanently boosting capacity by up to 8x at key locations. And T-Mobile customers already had access to the fastest LTE network in the Atlanta metro area!

“T-Mobile was already fastest in Atlanta, and now T-Mobile customers get even more speed and better coverage than before. We’ve made sure our customers will have an incredible mobile experience on game day, whether they’re watching from the stands or across the city,” said Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer at T-Mobile. “And at the same time we’re making these permanent upgrades that will continue to serve Atlanta long beyond the Super Bowl, we’re also laying a foundation for 5G.”

ATL Metro Speeds

T-Mobile permanently increased network capacity and coverage where the biggest crowds are expected, including Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, key hotels throughout the city, along transit routes and at dozens of Super Bowl event venues like Cobb Galleria, Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia World Congress Center and State Farm Arena. The Un-carrier also doubled LTE capacity at SunTrust Park and enhanced the network throughout Midtown, Downtown and around the stadium and tailgate areas so fans can stream, tweet, post and chat all they want.

To enhance indoor coverage and speed at key venues throughout the city, T-Mobile deployed more than 300 small cells -- most enabled with License Assisted Access (LAA), an LTE–Advanced technology that delivers more capacity and speed -- and 20 new Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). Mercedes-Benz Stadium was updated with the highest capacity DAS on T-Mobile’s network, with 50% more capacity than the next largest stadium, and the Un-carrier’s first outdoor C-RAN system in the tailgating and events areas. C-RAN technology improves network performance in high traffic scenarios, and even helps extend smartphone battery life, so fans can follow and share game day updates without needing to plug in.

While football fans in Atlanta take advantage of T-Mobile’s kick-*** LTE network, they’re invited to see what the future of wireless has to offer as well. T-Mobile’s Future of Wireless Truck will be parked at 302 Ted Turner Drive Northwest – just a short walk from Centennial Olympic Park – from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET Thursday, January 31 through Sunday, February 3. Packed full of real world demonstrations and hands-on interactive experiences, the Future of Wireless Truck brings technology like 5G and supercharged IoT to life.

Island of Misfit Links!

Winter-blog-banner-3.png

Winter brings a lot of goodness -- friends and family, holidays and celebrations -- but it can also bring tough weather and dangerous storms. Snow, sleet, ice and wind create treacherous conditions that lead to power and network outages.

WinterSafety.jpg

Rest assured, we’re ready. T-Mobile’s engineers have been actively preparing for winter conditions throughout the season so we can quickly respond to network outages just as soon as it’s safe to do so. Before storms hit, we set up an engineering command center and deploy rapid-response teams to minimize potential interruptions to wireless service. In addition, T-Mobile’s Geo-Redundant Network Operation Centers (NOCs) closely manage network traffic and further coordinate the response. In short – we’ve got you.

Now, want to take steps to get yourself ready? Here are a few tips:

Stay Connected:

  • Keep phones and devices fully charged. There is nothing quite like losing power when your phone is at 4% battery, so make sure to keep your devices full of juice.
  • Have additional chargers and battery back-ups stored at home, work and in your car.Back-up batteries are crucial if power goes out, particularly at home and work. In case you get stranded which traveling, you’ll want to have a charger handy so you can connect with loved ones. If you need to stock up, there are some great options      here.
  • Pre-program important numbers in your phone. In an emergency, you want to have your kids’ school, your boss, local police and fire departments, power company, etc. readily accessible to call.

Be prepared at home in case of power outages or being snowed in:

  • Have flashlights and batteries ready. Make sure they are in working order and easy to find if power goes out at night! Be careful using candles, too!
  • Stock up on non-perishable food and water. If the power goes out, food in your refrigerator can go bad quickly.
  • Keep coolers on hand. In case the power goes out, you may be able to keep refrigerated food longer if you have coolers and ice.

Even with advanced preparation, service interruptions can happen, particularly if there are power outages. If your service is interrupted during a storm, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Stay safe and calm. Our engineers are aware of outages immediately and will work 24/7 to get service restored as quickly as possible.
  • Hazardous conditions may cause delays. Downed trees, power outages, and other obstacles can hinder restoration efforts. Engineers will make repairs as soon as it’s safe to do so!
  • If you still have power but no mobile service, try Wi-Fi calling, which lets T-Mobile customers with capable devices to text and make and receive calls via a Wi-Fi connection. For Apple phones, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and for Android phones, go to Settings > More Connection Settings > Wi-Fi Calling

If you still have a connection to the T-Mobile network during and after a storm, here are a few reminders:

  • Send a text instead of calling. Text messages are more likely to get through a wireless network during high-usage periods because they take up fewer network resources.
  • If you need to make a call, consider keeping it short so others can also get through. The number of calls typically spikes during severe weather events, so keeping the lines free for emergency workers and your neighbors would be appreciated!

These reminders were originally posted in our T-Mobile Newsroom -- follow the Newsroom for more important alerts for customers, and stay safe – and warm!

Okay, if you’re like me at all, “megahertz” is a topic that ranks right up there with How to Darn Socks on the “Need To Know” scale. If you can feel your eyes glaze over at the very mention of the word, you’ve probably been wondering, “SO WHAT?”

TowerWell, let me tell you – this is a big deal – like, a T-Rex loose in Seattle sized deal (with all of the excitement but none of the destruction & chaos). Lend me your eyes for a hot minute & I promise, you won’t regret it!

First, let’s catch up on some recent events. Last year in April, T-Mobile made its largest network investment ever, tripling its low-band spectrum holdings by cleaning up at 600 MHz auction. And in early fall of this year, we were able to officially announce this phenomenal improvement in over 1,250 cities, throughout 36 states, including Puerto Rico!

Now for the real meat and potatoes. What does this mean for our amazing customers?

For starters, you’ll be seeing up to 4x stronger service in most buildings – this can include hard to reach places like cement apartments, stucco houses and cinder block shopping centers (aka "the dead zone"). You’ll also enjoy signal capable of travelling twice as far! Pair that with our recently announced Team of Experts, communities of specially trained Experts dedicated to serving your local region anytime you need to call or message in (if you haven’t checked out our app recently – you’re missing out!) and it’s official – we’ve started a movement, thrown down the gauntlet – and dedicated ourselves to providing you, our customer, with a truly Un-carrier experience whether it’s the signal your phone receives, or the service you receive personally.

With just a click of the mouse, you can check to see if your current device (or the new one you’re lusting after) is compatible. One more click, and you can check to see if your hometown is on our list of places already being blasted with that sweet 600MHz Extended Range LTE.

And this really is just the beginning – 5G is on the horizon. Earlier this month we hit a major milestone on the road to 5G, completing the first 5G data transmission on – you guessed it – 600 MHz. Learn more in our T-Mobile Newsroom!

We’ve got you covered & we won’t stop!

ATTENTION: anyone who wants to help us give for a good cause! T-Mobile's making more than $2M available for customers, fans and employees to donate on November 27th.

656x369_GivingTuesday_112718.png#GivingTuesday the Un-Carrier Way

Tis the season of giving, and T-Mobile wants to help everyone get into the spirit by giving back this Giving Tuesday. To do that, we'll make more than $2 million available to customers, fans and employees who want an opportunity to do some #GivingOnUs.

It’s simple and no strings attached!

On Giving Tuesday, November 27th, here’s how it will work:

  • T-Mobile Customers:Through the T-Mobile Tuesday app, every customer can give 10 meals* (on us!) to Feeding America®. Customers will also get the chance to win the opportunity to have T-Mobile donate up to $25, $100 or even $500 –to their favorite charity.**

  • T-Mobile Employees: The T-Mobile Foundation will deposit at least $27 in every T-Mobile employee’s Giving Account, which they can direct to any eligible charity of their choice.

“We love giving back during the holiday season and this Giving Tuesday we want our customers, fans and employees to do their #GivingOnUs!” said John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile. “We’re making it easy. We’re putting more than $2M in their hands and giving them the opportunity to donate to some amazing organizations that will make a huge difference in our communities."

The Un-carrier’s commitment to charitable giving goes far beyond just one day. So far in 2018, T-Mobile has donated more than $8 million and offered more than 34,000 volunteer hours to organizations that support youth, veterans, the environment, disaster recovery, ending hunger in America and more. This doesn’t even include donations to come from our Giving Tuesday campaign this year – which kicks off our busiest giving season of all!

We're always excited to offer the latest and greatest, so T-Mobile is stoked to offer the new iPad Pro. With all-screen design and next-generation performance, this is the most advanced and powerful iPad ever.

T-Mobile will be launching the 64GB and 256GB versions, and are available in stores and online now! The new iPad Pros are available with 11-inch or 12.9-inch Liquid Retina display and feature stunning color accuracy. Thanks to the new A12X Bionic processor, these iPad Pros can get the job done fast!

Don't let the sleek design fool you -- though these devices weigh barely a pound, they're no lightweights. With a full charge, they've got up to 10 hours of battery life to keep you going all day. Face ID gives the iPad Pro secure facial authentication, and with USB-C support, you'll be able to charge a second device right from your iPad.
