T-Mobile is keeping a close eye on the wildfire situation unfolding in Southern California, including the destructive Saddleridge fire, and monitoring any impacts on our network.

 

At this stage, we are not seeing any impacts on our network.

 

We are currently focused on supporting T-Mobile employees who have been displaced and we are evaluating the ways we can assist our customers and the local community as soon as it is safe to do so.

Given the unpredictable nature of wildfires, we encourage our customers to make a few preparations:

  • Update your family, friends and emergency services contact numbers. Make sure they’re saved and backed up.
  • If you’re planning to evacuate, let your family and friends know your evacuation plan, where you’re going and how to reach you.
  • Fully charge your phone and wireless devices, and have charging cables handy. You can also consider investing in a charging device, like an external battery that doesn’t need a power outlet.
  • Make sure your phone supports Wireless Emergency Alerts and that you have enabled notifications on your device. Visit www.t-mobile.com/wea for details on how to set up alerts on T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile devices.
  • Set up Wi-Fi Calling on your phone. For Apple phones, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling; and for Android phones, go to Settings > More Connection Settings > Wi-Fi Calling.

PG&E and SCE have issued advisories that due to the potential impacts of wildfires, they may take steps to shut off power in areas of Northern and Southern California as early as the morning of October 9th.

T-Mobile is working closely with PG&E and SCE to monitor the situation. Our priority is to keep our customers connected and ensure our network remains up and running. We have permanent generators in key cell sites to ensure they remain in service and other sites are prepared with battery backup. We also have a fleet of temporary generators that our emergency response teams can deploy if needed.

 

We encourage customers to take a few quick steps now to prepare in advance of the shut offs:

  • Follow PG&E and SCE on social media to stay up to date on the situation:
    o PG&E Twitter
    o SCE Twitter
  • Fully charge all your devices. Consider investing in a charging device like an external battery that doesn’t need a power outlet – and fully charge it as well.
  • In the event the T-Mobile network is unavailable and power is available to you at home, set up Wi-Fi Calling on your phone. For Apple phones, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling; and for Android phones, go to Settings > More Connection Settings > Wi-Fi Calling.

 

It is possible that some T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile stores may be closed during the shut offs. If you are a customer and need assistance with your account or service, please call 611 from your handset and we will be happy to help.  If you are unable to reach us via your mobile but have access to another working phone landline, you can call 1-800-937-8997.

Microsoft chose T-Mobile as its U.S. technical partner during the Project xCloud preview that will optimize mobile game streaming, which starts this month. Today, there is no way to play Xbox games over mobile networks on a smartphone or tablet, but with a preview of Project xCloud, T-Mobile and Microsoft are using T-Mobile’s LTE network to learn more about the ways gamers stream great games on the go.

 

For anyone who wants to preview the future of gaming and experience console-quality gaming without the console, on the go, anytime, the public preview of Project xCloud is a can't-miss.

In the immediate aftermath of a storm, mobile service might be interrupted or patchy. We suggest the following to stay connected:

  • If you have home broadband and power but no mobile service, try Wi-Fi calling, which allows T-Mobile customers with capable devices to text and make and receive voice calls via any capable Wi-Fi connection. IMPORTANT: If you have to call 911 using Wi-Fi, be sure to give your address to the operator.
  • If you have a connection to the T-Mobile network, keep calls to a minimum and as short as possible. This helps reduce the load on our network so others can get through.
  • Send a text instead of making a call. Text messages get through easier during times of congestion.

There are a lot of considerations to make when upgrading to a new phone, everything from improved battery life to increased storage, bigger screen size and definition of the display or even just whether it’s built to take a bath.

For the average American, though, these gains may not be enough for them to pony-up for a new device: According to recent surveys, while 81% of all Americans own a smartphone (up from 35% in 2011), they are holding onto their handsets longer — three years, on average. With prices sometimes rivaling a month’s rent, it’s easy to understand why some people might prioritize short-term savings and strive to get a little more mileage out of their phone.

But if you’re equally or more concerned about your phone’s performance, forgoing that upgrade could come at a pretty steep sacrifice. The biggest reason to consider upgrading to the latest and greatest smartphone goes deeper than the bells and whistles that make for good marketing copy and on-stage reveals. It has everything to do with performance and enhanced network coverage.

 

1. Network Is Life

Your smartphone is only part of the equation: While hardware advancements in processors and modems can certainly impact things like download speeds and coverage, it’s the beating heart of the wireless network that makes those things a reality. And upgrading to a new device will help you tap into the most current network technology.

For instance, the latest products from Apple, including iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, all run on T-Mobile’s low-band 600 MHz — the provider’s newest, most powerful signal that travels farther than ever. Think coverage in previously hard-to-reach places such as rural areas and others you wouldn’t previously get a signal, like basements and garages. (600 MHz is available in nearly 6,600 cities and towns across 46 states and Puerto Rico.)

Additionally, an iPhone with the latest technology and low-band 600 MHz capabilities is 25% faster than an iPhone without it, and T-Mobile customers with 600 MHz LTE smartphones get 52% more LTE coverage than phones without low-band. In short, this means a T-Mobile customer with a 600 MHz smartphone gets more coverage, capacity, speed and LTE availability on the provider's network. And who doesn’t love getting more from their network?

 

2. Better Battery

Since we use our smartphones for everything from waking us up to helping us map the quickest route, we all want a longer battery life between charges. No matter which smartphone you opt for, a newer device will more than likely have a more powerful battery than a previous model.

 

3. FOMO-Inducing Photos & Videos

Besides battery, camera upgrades are where many manufacturers compete to outdo each other — giving your social media posts an upgrade, too.

 

4. 'Ware & Tear

Oftentimes, older hardware is no longer supported by software updates and does not run smoothly, nor flawlessly. Plus, around the two-year mark, hardware begins to slow down — combine that with not connecting to the most current network, and you could start seeing slower speeds (if you can still call them that).

 

5. Higher Trade-In Value

The sooner you upgrade, the better deal you'll get for your smartphone at trade-in. Which can bring down the price a bit and alleviate some of that sticker shock.

Update: September 6, 2019

We are continuing to monitor Hurricane Dorian as makes its way up the Eastern seaboard.

 

We have seen limited local interruptions in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia but our teams remain ready to respond as needed and are working to restore our network where conditions allow.

 

T-Mobile is also continuing to offer a Text-to-Give option to customers who would like to donate $10 to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts in the US and Bahamas. We are assessing the impact of the rainfall and flooding caused by Hurricane Dorian’s landfall in the continental US.

 

We can confirm that T-Mobile’s network held up very well in Florida. In the Carolinas, we are seeing some local interruptions and will work to get our teams on the ground to assist just as soon as it is safe.

To help customers in the Bahamas affected by devastating impacts of Hurricane Dorian who do not have an unlimited plan, T-Mobile will be waiving roaming fees for voice, text, and data beginning August 30th through September 14th.

 

We’re also making it free to call and text from the United States to the Bahamas through September 14th. We will continue to assess the needs of our customers in other locations as the storm progresses.

If you are in an area that could potentially be impacted, we encourage you to charge devices and backup power packs now while power is intact. Please follow any evacuation orders that may be issued by local authorities.

Tropical Storm Dorian has been upgraded to hurricane status, with hurricane conditions possible in Puerto Rico and the risk of storm surge and hurricane-strength winds along the Florida east coast on Monday.

 

We are monitoring the situation very closely and hope everyone in the region stays safe over the coming days.

 

T-Mobile teams are ready to respond in both locations and we have a range of recovery equipment and supplies on hand including generators, network recovery equipment and community response trucks, should they be needed in the aftermath of the storm.

 

T-Mobile stores in Puerto Rico are closed today and it is possible that some will remain closed tomorrow, depending on conditions. How exactly does a $1 million donation impact people in need through Feeding America?

 

Hunger is an issue that impacts every county in the country. Forty million people, including more than 12 million children, may not know where they will find their next meal. Because of Feeding America's strategic partnerships to rescue food, this gift of $1 million helps to provide 10 million meals* for children, families and seniors in need.

 

Unlike, say, buying groceries at a store at everyday sticker prices, Feeding America works directly with major manufacturers, retailers and other partners across the country to secure safe, healthy food that would otherwise go to waste—up to 72 billion pounds of food is wasted in America each year. Every dollar donated to Feeding America helps secure and distribute at least 12 pounds of food. With an average meal, excluding water, weighing in at about 1.2 pounds of food, according to the USDA, we're able to feed 10 people for every dollar. Kind of astonishing -- but true!

 

Needless to say, we are tremendously grateful for T-Mobile's commitment in helping to fight hunger and bringing national attention to this critical issue. We can't stress how thankful we are to have partners in John Legere and T-Mobile who engaged customers, employees and the public at large through campaigns, in-store activations and the cookbook itself.

 

A million dollars is a lot of money, clearly. How important is it for people to donate on a smaller level, and how can the average person pitch in and make a difference?

 

Everyone has a role to play in ending hunger, whether that's making a donation, volunteering time at a local food bank, or using your voice on social media to spread the word. The Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 meal programs includes soup kitchens, schools and food pantries. Food banks rely on donors and volunteers to carry out their day-to-day operations. It's easy to support right in your community to help your neighbors in need. This is T-Mobile's second time delivering a record-breaking score (breaking its own record!) and marks the 18th time T-Mobile ranks highest among full-service providers. The Un-carrier has topped the rankings more than any other wireless provider in the history of the study. And that means Un-carrier customers WIN. Again…and again…and again. And again.

 

One year ago, T-Mobile completely reinvented customer care with the launch of Team of Experts nationwide, and it's no surprise that the Un-carrier delivers an unprecedented level of customer delight that's absolutely unmatched among Full Service wireless providers. The Un-carrier now has you covered by land, by air and by sea! T-Mobile is the first major wireless provider to light up the Gulf of Mexico with LTE, connecting offshore workers, vessels and critical infrastructure in an area larger than the state of Florida.

 

Connectivity has long been limited or non-existent in this heavily traveled area of the Gulf, and this more than 60,000 square mile expansion of T-Mobile’s nationwide LTE network lays the foundation for 5G in the Gulf of Mexico.

 

Staying Connected

Working with RigNet, Inc., a global provider of secure, intelligent networking solutions, T-Mobile now covers more than 60,000 square miles of the Gulf – an area larger than the state of Florida (U.S. Census Bureau). This brings far-reaching LTE coverage to the offshore workers, oil and gas platforms, recreational and commercial vessels and critical infrastructure in the area.

 

This new LTE coverage, which leverages T-Mobile's 600 MHz and RigNet's 700 MHz spectrum, provides a significantly enhanced experience for customers using RigNet's current Gulf of Mexico digital microwave infrastructure. And this isn't just for smartphones -- it enables businesses to connect critical infrastructure with Internet of Things (IoT) technology and monitor remote equipment in real time for increased productivity and safety. All this new coverage means better connectivity for Un-carrier customers.

 

5G Ready or BUST!

T-Mobile used 5G-ready equipment to light up LTE in the Gulf, so offshore consumers and businesses will have access to the next generation of wireless technology in the future. 5G promises to bring faster wireless speeds to help move massive amounts of data, lower latency for ultra-responsive networks, decade-long battery life for IoT applications and the ability to support exponentially more connections per cell site.

 

The Un-carrier has more than tripled its LTE network since 2014 and today covers 99% of Americans – that's 326 million people! Beyond its new coverage in the Gulf of Mexico, T-Mobile has expanded its LTE network footprint by nearly 190,000 square miles since the beginning of 2018.

 

T-Mobile continues to aggressively deploy 600 MHz Extended Range LTE to give customers even more coverage and capacity. Extended Range LTE travels twice as far from the tower and is four times better in buildings than mid-band spectrum, so it can provide better coverage in hard to reach places: inside buildings, along interstate highways and in rural areas. The Un-carrier has deployed Extended Range LTE with 600 MHz across 1.2 million square miles of the U.S., meaning customers in nearly 6,600 cities and towns in 46 states and Puerto Rico are already enjoying the coverage and capacity boost.
