WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

In my home while I am attached to my Gateway via WIFI, I notice I get no bars! Is this a function of the phone? I.E. if you on WIFI then you get no 2G, 3G or 4G?

I'm newbie to Android with this phone and figured since my older phones did not have this problem that this one would work just fine. My prior Blackberry 8520 did not have this problem?

Thanks in Advance for any advice you can recommend! Yes I've checked that data map and I'm in EXCELLENT VOICE and Data Area.

You should get the wifi symbol only, looks kinda like a spoon for lact of a better description. When you switch to wifi you are no longer on the towers. The towers are what give you the 234 g symbol

So are you telling me that Blackberry 8520 (from 2009) is able to ride both the WIFI and TOWERS where as this one can not? Boy if that the case HTC got some work to do!

why would you want to? wifi always gonna be better if you have a decent wifi signal. not only that, who knows the bb may have detected the tower signal without actually connecting to it

              • 4. Re: WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

I able to answer my own question here! Found out there is a button/widget/icon called WIFI calling! Turn that off and then both can be on at the same time. I.E. you can be connected to your Home/Office or other location. It the calling option that that takes you off the TMOB's tower! So if you have WIFI calling on also, then you running on your own WIFI!

It's RIP thou that these minutes get counted against you....LOL since you at the point are no longer making the phone call via the TMO network!

The way i understand it is with wifi calling on, when there is wifi available and you are connected to it, it will default to wifi calling which will still use plan minutes. When not in a wifi area and you have mobile network selected in your wireless/networks settings, it will switch to the towers. Skype can get you out of any payment though:) at least on a home puter.

We stand corrected on T-MOB charging this to our Minutues (I'm doing futher investigation) but check out this article I found:

T-Mobile makes Wi-Fi calls free — yet another reason to dread the AT&T merger

                    • 7. Re: WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

First off, the WiFi calling that Android does and the one that the Blackberry does are not the same.  Blackberry has UMA calling which is (in my opinion) much better.  First off, when making a call using UMA, you will be handed off from WiFi to the cell signal when you travel from one to the other.  The WiFi calling that Android does will drop the call when you walk out of WiFi range.  This is not the fault of HTC. All Android phones work this way.  Blackberry (T-Mobile's only) are the only phones that use UMA that I know of. As for charging you, it does at first hand seem crappy but the fact is, one of the main reasons for using WiFi calling is that you don't get a cellular signal. For those people who have that problem, just being able to make a call at all is the main reason for having the feature so paying for it is really a secondary consideration.  And lets be fair here. If T-Mo didn't charge you, what's to stop everyone from just getting a low minute plan and using WiFi whenever possible? T-Mo would lose a lot of money (great for you but no so much for them).  It is a business after all.  My home is a bit of a black hole so having it is a real plus. Now I realize that T-Mo could have allowed this for free all things considered but I'm just happy for the service and they certainly aren't alone in this practice.  At least they don't charge for using the WiFi Hotspot (yet) which is something AT&T does do.

Thanks for the Reply.... LOL everybody better get on UMA bandwagon then because Blackberry got it right there! As far as the pricing/cost for Wi-Fi...you stated very clearly LOL. I'm just sick of  hearing about "FREE WI-FI" when in reality it IS NOT FREE!

                        • 9. Re: WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

Yah, not sure about that free thing. I'm not even sure Blackberry is responsible for UMA because while it appears limited to Blackberry, it is also limited to T-Mobile's Blackberries.  I'm sure someone could probably explain that but you will not get UMA calling on any other carrier's BBs. it may be a combination of both T-Mo and BB.

                          • 10. Re: WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

It's not limited to BLACKBERRY anymore...this phone is UMA capable but here is a places where I found of List of them:

                            1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_Access_Network
                            2. http://www.smart-wi-fi.com/smartphones.php   <---- Where You will see MY TOUCH 4G (Select Details and has it as UMA capable)...

That informaton is being provided by the UMA Technology Organization (http://www.umatechnology.org/overview/)

Now if it would work like the BB on T-MOB network that would be sweet, but implementing UMA has been found to be costly to businesses (see Disadvantages under Wiki link provided)...Why I stated HTC has some work to DO...

BB would provided a bigger screen with keyboard I'm might have stayed with BB. But it does not offer that, why I never liked the phone in the first place! Too Old to be looking at  2X4 screen for Anything! I switched to HTC Phone in 2005 (running windows at the time),

Something worth noting too....ATT brought up Cingular Wireless they had UMA....now they are trying to buy T-MOB....wonder if they are going to throw away UMA again?

doesn't really matter to me. got unlimited everything

                              • 12. Re: WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

As a side note, call in and get the them to add the Free WIFI calling on your plan then your minutes wont get used.

                                • 13. Re: WIFI and 2G,3G or 4G can they be on at the same time?

I'm just happy t-mo gives us wifi calling. I have unlimited everything so minutes don't matter. I live on the side of a hill and get no tower signal in the house. wifi works great though. keeps me from having to walk outside. No other carrier that i know of offers wifi calling.
