Just go to Best Buy and buy an H2O wireless SIM. It is $60 a month for unlimited everything using AT&T towers. 3G works on the iPhone 4S (in fact you can't even ask to use edge, which was kind of a disappointment). I did it last night. In order to get the data to work you need to go to their website from your computer and click on configure. They'll send you a link tvia text hat makes it work perfectly! 4 Mb downloads from Chicago.

Tell everyone! I can't believe no one knows about this yet.

Get an H2o wireless sim! 3G unlimited for 60 per month. Better than AT&T and just as good as tmobile with tax. It works on my iPhone 4s.

I just started seeing H2O Wireless advertised in my neighborhood.  I know someone who is looking for this type of service, so I'll tell him about it.

    Hello,

I bought an iPhone 4 in France last January. I did not unlock my phone and since I got to the US, I have been using a jailbreak sim to have T-Mobile. It was working fine until last week when I updated the version of my phone to the new IOS version. Since then I cannot do anything with my phone, I cannot finish installing the new version and cannot go back to the old one.

    Please help!!

You undid the jailbreak when you updated your phone. Search jailbreak community forums to see if they can help you.

Some people have PMd about speeds. It varies dramatically between 400kB/s and 40kB/s. I don't know if this means it is being throttled, but it always says "3G".

Also btw, I love Tmobile! It simply isn't an option on the iPhone 4s :(. So for now H2O is the way to go.

Pretty simple absolute truth. You get what you pay for. ATT, 2gig data, 450 talk, 3G, $85/month. Unlimited talk to any cell. Insane to get the IP4S w/o 3g. Not insane just waste.

    I don't trust h2o. I don't want to pay 85/month, but if I want iphone.......

You cannot stream anything on 2G, edge. You cannot download apps on 2G, you cannot download a

Song, or it takes an hour, etc.

I used an iphone 3g on tmo. Frustration.

I agree with your sentiment.  Its led me to the "Get a cheap android and wait" strategy.  Not great but really, the monthlies on ATT & Verizon are just not acceptable, especially in this downturn.  And from my questioning my friends, you'll see your $85/mo be well over $90/mo after fees/taxes.  Is a phone plan really worth over a kilobuck a year?!

So I'm opting for getting a cheap android, extending my contract (I'm not leaving TMo 'till the end), and waiting for something better to come along.

The H2o stunt is appealing but I just don't think you can get an ATT based MVNO to be all that different than ATT itself.

How so?  Do you mean in terms of coverage, customer service or pricing?

Good point.  Mainly the pricing and coverage.

But the service might be much better, and possibly the selection of plans could be broader.

I'm going to do some experiments with ATT coverage (I did some 4 years ago and ATT didn't cover Santa Fe NM at all well) and if the coverage is OK and I do decide to go with ATT, I would definitely consider H2o instead if we get good reports.

Here's one detailed description:  http://goo.gl/w3gnL .. let me know if you find others.

I think that the pricing will stay the same and there would be minimal surprises with it.  If H2O is like Virgin Mobile, even if plan prices increase after you start service, you could keep your old pricing as long as your service stays active.

Coverage will vary by location.  I have good AT&T coverage where I am and where I travel to.  However, I don't travel out to New Mexico, so I can't comment on that area.  The data speeds in the link that you posted give me pause, but that poster didn't mention his location.  He also never gave an idea of what AT&T's post-paid service data speeds were like in those same areas, because he had always used GoPhone from AT&T.  All that to say that an AT&T customer may experience similar speeds in those locations.
