UNLOCKED LG Optimus G E970 LTE compatibility

I just purchased an UNLOCKED LG Optimus G E970(AT@T) and inserted my t-mobile SIM. It works fine and for data, displays 4G which I think HSPA+ but not 4G/LTE ? I thought LTE radio frequency band 4(1700MHz) if supported on device is compatible between AT&T and T-Mobile. Tying to understand why t-mobile LTE not working on LG optimus G where iphone 5 LTE works fine in my area. Any idea other than installing custom ROM.

Thanks for reaching out via the support forums rashp12.  Unfortunately, we can't gaurantee service on non TMO devices.  Please review this document and let us know if you have any questions: Bring Your Own Device: BYOD

Also, what is your zip code and we can see if any of the towers in the area have been modernized?

Thanks. tmo_sean_i.  I know my area(zip - 27513) has T-mobile refarmed with LTE support because my son's iphone 5 shows LTE. Not sure but my unlocked LG Optimus G e970 may require firmware update to enable radio LTE band 4 (1700/2100 AWS). In custom ROM XDA/Cyanogenmod forums, someone tried and work by going in service menu and changing WCDMA-ONLY>>MODEM SETTINGS>>RAT Selection>>Automatic and adding APN fast.t-mobile.com. It didn't work for me.

I appreciate you getting back to me rashp12.  Unfortunately, we haven't started the re-farm in that area yet.  We do have several towers, including LTE, but until the re-farm is done this will be an ongoing issue for you.  iPhones purchased directly from Apple will work on our network regardless.  Please let us know if you need anything else.

Well, that may be standard answer given to t-mobile customers but it is a wrong answer. Why ? first local t-mobile retail rep says my area is refarmed over six months back and on top few mothns back started supporting LTE. I tested both in my home refarmed 1900Mhz HSPA data and LTE on my son's iphone 5.

One theory with LTE disable problem with T-mobile not recognizing LG optimus G LTE compatible band 4 like AT&T does. It seems t-mobile towers do not recognize the LGOG as an LTE device than removes the LTE feature and replaced it with a standard data package, CSRs not placing the correct feature on it. So, one ends up with 4G speed and not LTE.

Thanks for getting back to me rashp12.  The information I had was out of date, I apologize for this.  The re-farm has started in the area but isn't complete yet.  The LTE towers have been refarmed, but the standard 4G towers have not.  That might be part of the problem.  Again, we unfortunately can't guarantee service on non T-Mobile devices.  Having said that, feel free to reach out to us via phone or live chat and we can have one of our technicians take a look at your device: http://support.t-mobile.com/community/contact_us

Yesterday, I went to t-mobile retail store in my town and ask them to help swap, put new sim card. Soon as i turned on my LG optimus G e970 phone, 4gLTE showed up. It was verified by t-mobile customer rep. I did testing web browsing and with OoKLA speed test app and the upload/down speed was indeed LTE, almost 3x times the 4G. But, after an hour or so while I was driving around town, the phone dropped down to 4G and never returned to 4gLTE. I went back to same place to verify where 4gLTE came up after swaping sim card but now no more. So, it seems when new sim is inserted in this phone, the 4gLTE works but later when more communications between phone and tower continues, t-mobile somehow restricts capability of phone to cap down to 3G/4G. This phone in hardware/software spec(freq bands) is similar to Nexus 4 which t-mobile sales/supports. I conclude this issue needs to be looked at by t-mobile device/network engineering department,

Hi rashp12, thanks for all the legwork and keeping us up to date! I agree that Contacting a technical care representative is the way to go! I hope this helps!

If the the original posted did have their problem solved, I (and a TON of folks over on XDA) would love to hear what fixed the problem.

I (and many others) have this exact problem with the e970. When the SIM card is first put in the phone, LTE, but then it mysteriously disappears.

I've tried different ROMS and every radio (both e970 specific and Nexus 4 hybrids) I could find for the e970 but alas, no LTE. I get LTE on my Nexus 4 with the same SIM though...

Seems like the presence, then poof-dah absence of LTE indicates that while the device is capable, the carrier is not.
