Wifi calling on iPhone 5s

hammarblad

I just bought my iPhone 5s, because the T-Mobile listed it amongst devices capable of Wifi calling. Seriously; if you shop the website for phones able to do this, the iPhone is near the top of the list. It doesn't work, and all discussions here I've found say it can't do it. So why the heck is it listed amongst devices able to do it? Ugh!

Can you give a link to where it says it does wifi calling?  That way the moderators can pass that on so the web page can be corrected.

As you mentioned, one reason being because Apple always wants complete control over its products - doesn't do wifi.

    Hi hammarblad,

@miket is right, please provide a link for reference as to where you saw this.

I have pulled up the iPhone 5s page on our site and nowhere am I seeing we've marketed this device nor any of our Apple products to have Wi-Fi calling as a built in feature, transparency is very important to us. http://goo.gl/WgqU4t

If you are still within the return period, you can check into your options around returning this device for one that does have Wi-Fi calling.

I am definitely confused. It appears that there are several wi-fi calling apps available for  the iPhones  .... such as Line 2.  I have used their service and it is fine and handy. However, they charge about $10/month for the service.  I thought that T-Mobile would come out with a similar app and their "Wi-Fi Calling" would be perfict and FREE.  If Line 2 can do it, why not T-Mobile?

You are talking apples and oranges.  TM's wifi calling (they have been the only U.S. carrierto have ever offered it - for years) is a built-in part of the TM system.  While it started out as a hardware installed feature (mainly on BB phones), it has been part of TM's phone operating system in Androids and BB phones the past 3 years or so.  Calls are processed thru TM's system just as tho you were on a cell tower.

There have been wifi and computer apps for calling for a long time for use from computers and phones that connect to the internet.  Skype is the most famous.  People who buy iphones should know Apple does not conform to most industry standards - from plugs (like charging devices) to some common software.  Wifi calling on TM is NOT an app - it's a feature.  TM is not an "app" development company.

I was just on Chat with tech support about WiFi calling on the Moto X, and they told me that while the Moto X can't do WiFi calling, the iPhone 5S can. True or incompetent?

The Moto X is a generic Android and doesn't come customized to take advantage of TM's wifi calling feature.  No Apple phone comes customized for/with TM's wifi feature.

You could use a program like Skype on any Android - kind of klutzy.  TM's wifi feature is seamless and just as easy as routing a call via cell tower.  I would assume Apple allows Skype to work on their phones.

AT&T released a special wifi calling app for iPhones... How about it t-mobile?  Why don't you do that too? Don't blame it on Apple... I'm your customer month in month out who happens to use an iPhone. If AT&T can do it so can you.. And they aren't even customer minded..

Read my post fm. 12/13/13 above.  TM's wifi calling is not an "app" but a built-in feature.  Wifi calls on enabled phones are processed thru the TM system - just like cell tower calls.

There are some areas in the country where ATT has had problems processing cell calls for Apple phones ever since they came out.  The Bay Area, here, is one.  I had thought that situation was mostly resolved in the past year.  (I say this because I have had very few calls where I had to tell the caller to call back when he/she has access to a working phone.)  I have no patience trying to talk to someone on an inferior connection.  Of course business people, here knew not to use Apple phones to begin with.

But I digress.  I am sure even Apple has allowed wifi calling apps to be installed.  Question, does the ATT app for Apple phones process the call over att's system?  How do they show up on the bill?

It would be nice but I can see it becoming a security nightmare. I also have a TelnaMobile SIM and they have a SIP-based WiFi Calling. You use any SIP app (they provide some preconfigured) and when you are registered on the SIP server your incoming calls are routed to your SIP client. They are a much smaller, specialty, carrier.

Tmobile does not offer wifi calling on the iPhones at all ! Not talking about 3 party apps ! Talking about wifi calling Tmo offers on most of their phone, wifi calling though Tmo network

Thank you. I'm sure we are all quite aware by now that T-Mobile does not have WiFi calling on their iPhones. However, I was responding to ddavlin whose post asked about 3rd party apps and why T-Mobile couldn't do something similar. I was merely providing an example of how one carrier uses 3rd party apps to provide WIFi calling functionality.
