My HTC Sensation 4G doesn't list my HP Printer, HP Photosmart C6240 or C6200 series. My HTC is currently running Android Version 2.3.3; HTC Sense Version 3.0; Software number 1.29.531.2. Does anyone know if HTC is going to update the list of print drivers? I checked the HP site and they do not list drivers for phones. I created an email on HTC's support page but decided I would post here and see if anyone has any information.
Thanks in advance.
I believe there are several cloud print apps available in the market. Perhaps one of them would be a better solution.
The HP Photosmart C6240 is not a wireless printer. You need a printer that supports wireless network printing. Such as the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless. They can't make a non-wireless printer do wireless printing. (Perhaps you can find some 3rd party program to work with your PC and the phone in order to reach your printer, but you'll be hard pressed to find a direct phone to printer solution to use with a printer that is not wireless enabled.)
From the available options, it looks like the Sensation's WiFi Printing will support most wireless printers from Canon, EPSON or HP. I have it setup to use my 6500 Wireless and it works.
But honestly, while the feature is nifty, I don't really "use" it for any real purpose. Because the Sensation's printing feature only is available in a few stock apps, such as Contacts, Mail and Calendar. So it's not like I can print a PDF document, or print a Word document or anything other than the few available options. Most apps don't support it, just the few stock apps.
So if you do often print your Appointments, Contacts or E-mails and really need to do it from your phone, then you'll need to buy a compatible printer.
You mean I can PRINT from my Sensation?
Ok, I partially knew this was possible as I almost recall seeing the word "printer" somewhere [where? I don't know].
Now, you say "wireless network printer" -- does it have to be that, or can it be any network printer? I would imagine as long as it had an IP address on the network it'd work? I have a Dell-somenumber network color laser printer [has it's internal print server... just plug my network cable into it, no other strings attached... except a power cord], and in the odd chance I'd want to print to that [or have an app that prints?], could I?
How would this be different from a wireless network printer, such as the Officejet you mention? I can't see it making you change network modes to connect to it to print.
Does anyone have a mini-tutorial on printing?
Could be I'm very wireless, so I always think in those terms .
I guess if the printer is on a network via cable, it may work. But of course it would have to be a model that the Sensation supports. I've got multiple wireless printers. My Sensation does not support them all. The HP Photosmart C6240 can be hooked into a network via cable, but I guess it's not supported. I know the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless works.
To learn how to do it, read page 29 in the manual.
Go get "cloud print" from the market and set up your printer as a cloud printer on google. See http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/p/cloudprint.html
So, my phone SAW my [wired] printer, but it only supports a couple printers out of the box. My Dell wasn't one of them. And I didn't go search for drivers [yet].
The cloud printing sounds like an idea -- wonder if I can set one of my linux machines up as a cloud print server to it.
Wait... I can't see me wanting to print anything from my phone! :-D

Exactly. It's a neat feature, but unless you really have the need it's nothing to lose sleep over . Especially since only a hand full of apps can even use it. Certainly nothing to lose sleep or go to the store over.
*acts like one of those OTHER users*
BUT! BUT! I WANT IT, AND I WANT IT NOW!
*falls on the floor and wets himself laughing* Oh gee.. now I need to wear diapers again.
The only time I've really wanted to print from my phone is when I get coupons in my email, but even that's not a huge hassle to go to the lappy for.
Try the app Printshare. I just got a copy free from the Amazon Appstore. They give away one paid app for free everyday and today it's Printshare. Otherwise, the full Premium version of the app cost $13. So if you don't get it for free today via Amazon's Appstore app you'll have to pay $13.
I'm finding it can print to more printers than the Sensation's built in printing app. (For printers that Prinshare does not have a specific driver for, it has a "Generic" print driver, that I'm finding works just as well for black and white prints. Now, I can print to any WiFi printer in my house instead of just my HP Printer.) Also, Prinshare can print more than just PIM data. I've just used it to print a picture too. I tried getting it to print text and PDF documents, but those require an additional free add on. And every time I try to install those document and PDF add ons the installs fail. I was able to get the app to download and install print drivers though and those work for things I've been able to print so far. (Printed PIM data and a picture.)
Ya can't beat free, so get it today via the Amazon Appstore.
As long as you have wifi on your internet and your printer is connected to it wired or wireless you should be able to print. When you print it will scan for a printer and install the driver. if the driver for your printer is not in the list just pick another HP printer that is similar and it should work. It did for me.

Nah, some printers simply will not work and the Sensation won't give you an option. For example, I've got a Brother WiFi printer on my network, the Sensation won't work with it at all and won't provide any option for using it, despite clearly seeing the printer. My HP does fine though and the Sensation has some support for HP printers. The Sensation's built in stuff simply does not work with any network printer, only certain ones. And the Sensation's built in stuff only prints from a few apps.
The Prinshare app works with way more printers and way more means to print.
