First I would check in the device manager on the computer to see if the driver is there when the phone is connected or shows a exclamation point or question mark.
If not, ensuring the sound is on and turned up, plug in and unplug the phone and see if you hear anything.
You might also want to try a different usb cable and port on the computer.
We wanted to check in on this; was your S4 able to be recognized by your computer? If so, as has been suggested, the first thing we would want to do is have you visit Tethering & mobile hotspot: Samsung Galaxy S 4 and view "Drivers for computers" and ensure this is up to date. Can you ensure you have the most updated drivers, or let us know if this has been taken care of?
