Concord network connectivity problems

We just got a concord cell phone and we can't seem to get connected to the wifi in our home.  its says its connecting and then disconnects.  We can't seem to get connected to the internet either.  I called customer service and they tried to walk me through a few things and nothing worked.  then they told me internet is not available in my area.  That doesn't make any sense to me.   Can someone help me get connected with this phone?  The sim card was in another phone and we switched phones.  Does T-mobile need to change something on my account to make this work?  Anybody have any idea?
