GSM 1900MHz vs UMTS 1900MHz ?

I'm trying to buy a smartphone from an online retailer and order T-Mobile SIM card separately(Simple Choice) so I wanted to know what the difference between GSM 1900MHz and UMTS 1900MHz is ? The website named Gsmarena has phone specifications and they have a filter with GSM and UMTS options so I wanted to know which (GSM or UMTS?) 1900MHz frequency does my phone need to have in order to work with T-Mobile 42Mbps?

I don't need a phone with LTE support sine its not available here in San Francisco.I just want to have 2G,3G and HSPA+ (42Mbps) speeds.

All I know is that my phone needs to support 1700MHz,2100MHz and 1900MHz.Correct me if I'm wrong or if I'm missing something.

Thank you.

GSM is 2G, UMTS is 3G.

    Thanks I didn't know that.

I heard T-Mobile is moving some of the HSPDA+ network to 1900MHz band.Does that 1900MHz band have to be GSM or UMTS(HSDPA) for it to work at 42Mbps?

For example , one phone is advertised as GSM 850/900/1800/1900 & HSDPA 1700/2100 .In this case if I buy this phone and T-Mobile moves the 42Mbps network to 1900MHz frequency in my area, will I have 42Mbps service or does my phone have to support HSDPA 1900Mhz instead of GSM 1900Mhz?

    Another frequency question.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini (model i8190) is advertised as GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 900/1900/2100.Will it work properly on 42Mbps network?

    Thank you !

t-mobile's bulk of the network is AWS 1700/2100. Their PCS 1900 Mhz is spotty and sparse. Do not try to save a few bucks and buy a brick.

  • 4. Re: GSM 1900MHz vs UMTS 1900MHz ?

First of all, for T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 (AWS) to work you need both 1700 and 2100 frequencies because 1700 is used for sending and 2100 is use for receiving, if you don't have both it won't work at all. Second, T-Mobile's AWS 1700/2100 and HSPA+ 21 (PCS) 1900 networks operate concurrently, the PCS was refarmed from the edge (2G) 1900.

Is AWS basically the same as HSDPA? None of the advertised phones is mentioned to have "AWS".They are advertised as HSDPA 850/1700/1900/2100 e.t.c

AWS for T-Mobile is also know as UMTS band IV. Here is a link to Wikipedia with a list of phones with AWS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/list_of _AWS_devices

i was also going to buy from online Chinese Phone (cp) either amazon , ebay, ahappydeal.com etc. but not sure if the cp will work on tmobile (tmo) in the city of Los Angeles and surrounding LA county area.

Can you tell me which online url you bought successfuly from and their specs for the phone. I wanted to get a phalblet,or tablet phone combo with dual sim, qual or quad core, etc. Have you succcessfully got the cp to work on tmo? I bought the sim reg. from tmo directly. I have contacted the tech support at the cp sites but they didnot answer my questions nor give much confidence. All they said was donot worry it will work on tmo.

will the following exmaple from oneline work on tmo?
