I recently bought a factory unlocked iPhone 5 in February 2013....Never dropped it, have the box, receipt, charger, and unused headphones. Can I go to an Apple store and swap it for a TMobile iPhone so I can make use of the AWS 1700 Band...I'm kind of annoyed why my I go from 4G --> EDGE.
Ok here's the thing...
First of all, whichever Iphone 5 you have, won't get LTE or 4G unless you live in an area that has it. Currently, there are 7 cities that have LTE. The rest of places are either 4G or Edge.
However, if you live somewhere that has LTE, the T-mobile Iphone 5 will get speeds up to 31mbs whereas the Factory Unlocked Iphone 5 will get speeds up to 21mbs. This is not a big deal to most people.
Lastly, unfortunetly - T-mobile won't swap it out. If this is really important to you, I would just sell it via Craigslist.
I have the Factory Unlockled Iphone 5 and live in Kansas City. I currently get speeds up to 21mbs since I am in LTE area.
I live in NYC
I have the A1428 GSM model factory unlocked right from the Apple store.
I currently get 4G in refarmed areas but dip down to edge in MOST areas around the city. I seriously hate it. And I don't want to wait years before LTE comes around....
I don't see why Apple won't swap the phone. Is it that much of an issue?
That "dip" you are getting from 4G to Edge will happen in the T-mobile handset as well. The only difference in the t-mobile handset versus the factory unlocked one is which LTE speeds you will get.
I know, it sucks! I wish I would swap mine too but this is seriously how big name companies make money from people.
Currently only Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, and Washington DC have LTE. Everywhere else will be either 4G or Edge until it spreads.
Why would they swap a brand new phone for a used one that can't be resold
That "dip" will NOT happen on the T-Mobile iPhone 5 - that's the point, it will have AWS 1700Mhz HSPA+ support where as the current unlocked iPhone 5 does not; those only get the refarmed PCS 1900 Mhz HSPA network. T-Mobile's coverage of the AWS HSPA 42 Mbps+ network is exponentially better than their refarmed spectrum. LTE will work the same on both phones.
It sounds like skaterboy's best option is to sell your unlocked iPhone on Craigslist or Ebay and buy the T-Mobile iPhone for the 4G service coverage; otherwise, you'll probably be on Edge like me. I usually have wifi access so I'm not that worried about it and will probably wait for the 5S or 6, but you'll probably be frustrated unless you get the T-Mobile version.
Nope they won't let you if it's past 30 days. I talked to an Apple Store manager the other day and he said the only option would be for me to sell the phone on CL and get the new one.
I read somewhere that the report or whatever apple made to the fcc for the "new" a1248 phone had NO change and that aparently it was the EXACT same model, just that the AWS HSPA+ 1700 band was enabled at factory and that was the only way to do so. Also aparently there are older A1248's that already have the 1700 band supported (http://www.todaysiphone.com/2013/04/how-to-check-if-your-iphone-5-will-support-t-mobiles-hspa-or-lte-network/) so does that mean there will be THREE different versions of the A1248? Also, now that tmobile has this new offer to allow you to trade in an iphone 4 or 4s for a discount on the 5. Do you think they would accept a factory unlocked iphone 5 for the offer? I feel that it would be a bit silly if they only accepted the older models and would not take an iphone 5.
Look at the prices for trade in, $100 for a 4. You'd be way better off selling on craigslist
Did you purchase AppleCare+ with your iPhone 5?
If so, you could invoke the replacement option for a damaged phone. Your would have to pay $49 but the replacement would be identical to the T-Mobile iPhone 5 since Apple will only have one A1428 model after April 12th and that phone will support the AWS 1700MHz HSPA+ band as well as the 1900MHz PCS band and of course LTE.
You can't purchase AppleCare+ afterward, however.
i just got news a source that you should sell your iphone 5 and pay the difference and then get apple care +
Lmao, theres no way i'm selling my phone on craigslist or eBay. I just thought Apple may have the decent courtesy to trade in an Unlocked iPhone 5 I got less than 2 months ago in perfect out of the box condition.
In that case, I may just use the phone and wait it out till the 5s comes out or 6 like others said. The 5 is becoming obsolete soon anyway.
