why do i need kies, where is direct usb storage

it's absolutely ridiculous that the phone deviates from industry standards on such a simple thing as usb storage. i don't use windows *or* mac, i'm on linux. the kies software is buggy and won't upgrade my firmware, either.

I agree the implementation on this phone for storage stinks, and does not follow Industry Standards. Welcome to Samsung.

On my Samsung Galaxy S Relay, if I plug it into my Windows PC via USB, the phone gives me a choice as the whether it looks like a "Media Device (MTP)" or "Camera (PTP)". If I have it set as "Camera (PTP)", then under Windows it appears as a "SGH-T699 Digital Camera". If I open it, then it basically displays two folders, one called "Card" and one called "Phone". The "Card" folder is the MicroSD Card in the MicroSD slot. The "Phone" folder is the phones internal storage. At this point, you can treat these folders like those on a USB drive, and just read/write to them as you wish.

You know for a Linux guy you should know why MTP was chosen. For reference if you do not know. Start your computer and unplug your hdd. That's what happens when you use UMS without partitions. Then when an update happens and it is larger than your system partition you'd be up in arms about you not getting the update. The reason why you can't because. eMMC can't be re partitioned. If they split the partitioned to a large size you'd complain about how the partition leaves you less user storage. With MTP you have a much system space for updates and allows more user storage and less wasted space.

used a mac to update firmware. really stupid they dont use the firmware check in the system menu. phone should be able to update when im not near a computer.
