indian9990, the message is  "firmware upgrade encountered an issue . Please select reovery mode in Kies and try again.  By the way, Jossyln said that the phone needs to be reflashed, 4 days without phone.  Unacceptable, but my anger is with Tmobile not samsung.

Yes I have rebooted both PC and phone numerous times.

With the phone in download mode and plugged into your computer, open Kies.

Is the phone detected by Kies?

    If so,

Go to tools --> Emergency firmware recovery

You're device should be in that list.

Do the emergency recovery and let me know how that works out

    Hi All,

I was able to recover my phone using Kies. I installed Kies on different computer.

    Steps below.

    1. Install Kies on new computer or uninstall Kies from the existing computer. Delete all the left over Kies related files from the computer. Reboot the computer. Install the Kies again
    2. Reboot the computer.
    3. Connect Phone using USB cable to Computer.
    4. Computer will install the USB driver. If device not recognized error pops up. Reboot the computer.
    5. Connect the Phone to computer using USB cable.
    6. Launch the Kies application
    7. Click Tools -> Firmware upgrade intiliazation
    8. Follow the instructions.
    9. It will take a while. be patient.

    I now have ICS.

Thank a lot for the help guys.

    Thanks!

Already done that Indian, it freezes during recovery as well.  Back on phone 3rd time to Tmob  (35 min) they insist its Samsung problem, they can

    a) replace phone using my insurance  $100 deductable or

    b) I can send the phone to samsung  (not sure if there are any charges or not) and go to local tmob store and get loaner phone.

I've been a customer since 1996  (Omnipoint).  Booooo!

Have you tried another computer? Try the method I posted on the previous page.

  • 20. Re: I need some serious help...Firmware Upgrade Encountered an issue...

Yes.. unplugged.. and plugged nothing happens. Same Odin Mode.

Doesn't matter anymore. I went to t-mobile and theyre sending me a replacement tomorrow. It's broken

  • 21. Re: I need some serious help...Firmware Upgrade Encountered an issue...

Mind as well try the method I posted above just to see if it'll work since it's broken

  • 22. Re: I need some serious help...Firmware Upgrade Encountered an issue...

Hi, I was having the same problem like 30 mins ago. I solved my issue of not being able to go into Recovery Mode. I was also in ODIN Mode with the same message as lin013190. What I did was just unplug my phone and removed the battery. After this, I put the battery back on (like 10 seconds after) and held the up volume button and down volume button at the same time. And while still holding these two down, I pluged in the device to the USB connected to my computer. This immediately made it go into recovery mode.

Now, My problem was that I thought I had bricked my phone or something because I was in the ODIN mode and it was telling me to go into Kies on recovery mode or something. I was trying to hold the volume buttons and the power button to go into recovery mode but it never worked until I did what I already described, but here it goes again to make myself clear:

Unplug the phone from the USB cable connected to the computer (never tried it with the power adapter)

    Remove the battery

Put the battery back into the phone

hold the up and down volume buttons at the same time

AND while still holding the volume buttons down at the same time plug the USB to the phone (The USB is already connected to the computer)

This will take you to Recovery Mode immediately.

Also I used Upgrade and Initialization option on Kies (The one you download from the Tmobile's webpage and install on your computer, I just learned about it last night).

I went into Upgrade and Init option and tiped in the S/N and Model of my phone and then after one or some steps it asked me if I agreed and if I wanted to save or not (I forgot the detail). I said "Agree" and "dont save" and then another window poped up saying that I needed (again) to go into Recovery Mode (a small window in the Kies program). If I pressed yes it poped up back right away, dont say no because it will kick you out and it has to load the firmware again.

Before you press yes again, do the USB trick: Unplug the phone, take battery out, put back in... hold buttons, plug USB, goes into Recovery Mode. Press up (as it tells you to, only two options, cant go wrong).

And from here I think I still had the same screen but Kies started doing something on my computer screen (downloading stuff).

After this it was just waiting for the thing to finish loading.

If anybody has questions, let me know please!

    Hi,

I tried your method, but everytime I try to do emergecy recovery, it says update firmware failed. It cant even do emergency recovery. Sigh

  • 25. Re: I need some serious help...Firmware Upgrade Encountered an issue...

Try using a windows pc. Thats the one i have. Maybe that will work.

  • 27. Re: I need some serious help...Firmware Upgrade Encountered an issue...

This issue is solved.  All you need to do is unmount your SD cart, then restart the process.

  • 28. Re: I need some serious help...Firmware Upgrade Encountered an issue...

After struggling with this for awhile myself, I have figured out how to fix the issue. With the message that you currently have, plug it back in with the USB. Then go to Kies Air > Tools > Emergency Recovery. This will fix it and finish the update. Goodluck

Here's a cool idea. Don't claim an issue is resolved when it isn't. I've been sitting here for four hours, trying every work around imagineable, and yet I'm still getting nothing from Kies and the same "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue" message tell me to, you guessed it, go back to Kies.
