Sudden massive battery drain

Started yesterday morning when my G2 died. I went to bed the night before at 70%. Typically, when I wake up, it should be at 60%. It was dead. Took all day to charge, then suddenly started to drain rapidly. Switched out batteries with the same result. Went to bed at 100%, awoke to 19%. There have been no changes to the apps, or phone it's self. This is with 2 phone calls and zero text messages. WiFi, GPS and other energy consuming actions are off...Always are off. I could get up to 48 hours on a single charge. As I stated, the rapid discharge of the battery happened suddenly.

Anyone else experience this?

hey..i'm seeing the same thing on my G2.

Just started day before (July 26th).

I applied some updates from Marketplace to installed apps.

    One was Google Maps.

Now....my phone is nearly dead every day after sitting unused at night.

Only thing I see is Google Maps running when phone is powered up

    and service: NetworkLocationServices running.
When I kill that service, it just restarts automatically.

I've turned OFF wifi, GPS locators....

That didn't seem to do any good.

So, my next plan is to remove Google Maps and then see what my phone does overnight.

Are you using a cheap-o charger that didn't come with the phone? I have heard others complain of this exact problem when doing so. Also, has the service gotten very poor in your area?

This isn't necessary, as Google Maps isn't known to drain the battery if you aren't using it.

Cheapo or regular charger.....Never had this problem before.

Let me add that I checked the battery history and it was only running at 11%, which is low. As I said, one phone cal and zero texts. The last time I had battery problems was when I rooted and flashed Froyo on my G1. The battery history was always at 100% running/usage then.

You may not have had the problem before, but it's worth checking out. Have you flashed anything onto your G2?

When you say flash, do you mean expose myself?

Actually, no I have not. This is why I put off rooting and flashing a custom rom as the last one was a disaster.

That's very odd. As I asked before, has the service where you live gotten worse?

Not that I can tell. As I said, I have not used the phone much the last few days.

Okay, another recommendation is to maybe sleep with it plugged in? That's what I do and I always get at least a full day out of my battery. (I have terrible service at work, so it drains the battery) Then you should be able to get all day out of it at least. I know that doesn't solve the problem, but it will put a bandaid on it at least.

I had the exact same issue show up all of a sudden yesterday morning as well. I unplugged my phone at 6am, hardly used it other than a quick check in and a few minutes of checking some feeds while waiting in a waiting room. But when I got home and checked my phone between 10-11am, it was already in the yellow. At first I thought maybe I had forgotten to charge it that night, but I plugged it back in, charged it again, and the battery went from fully charged to empty in about six hours.

I use the stock charger, and checking the battery info in "my device" it says the battery health is good with a voltage of 3934 mV, so I don't think the battery went bad. I've had the phone since November, and even leaving gps, bluetooth, and wi-fi on, I've never had the battery drain this fast. Just to be sure, I did try turning those off (as well as using wireless and gps to find my location), but that didn't lessen the drain. And its not a signal issue, because I was home for most of the day, and on the wireless to boot, and when I did leave, I only traveled to places I know I've had strong coverage in the past.

I did notice in battery usage, Android OS had skyrocketed to 50%. The only cause I can think of were recent app updates the night before, which included googlemaps. Though googlemaps itself wasn't showing up in the battery usage screen. I did uninstall the updates, and that did knock down the Android OS battery usage to the 30s. But my battery still seemed to be draining fast. Though that may also be because I've been on it constantly trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

Has anyone else who's had this problem figured out a fix yet?

I see a common denominator here. I remembering updating Google maps and a few other apps the night before. I removed all but the maps as I use that a lot. Still experiencing unusual battery drain.

I just removed the update to google maps that was applied on Tuesday...version 5.8.0

now I'm back to version 4.5.1

I did not remove the application completely, just unistalled the updates to it.

Now when i check running applications/services:

    menu

    settings

    Applications

    Running services

....Google maps and NetworkLocationServices are NOT running

Under version 5.8.0, they did show as running.

What I see the issue is...is that Google maps when running, even when GPS and wifi are off, will keep the phone

    from going into sleep mode.
So, I'm thinking since the phone can't go into sleep, that is draining the battery faster than normal.

Prior to Tuesday, I've been able to go almost a week easily before having to charge my phone up.

Tomorrow, I'll see what my battery drain is overnight, after a full charge (with a stock charger).

Then, thinking I'll reapply the updates and see what happens after that.

If you check Android Marketplace Google Map, you'll see several reviews logged today 7/28 by others

(one had EVO 3D phone) experiencing the same battery drain issue.

So, I doubt this is something specific to G2.

Can you detail as to how to remove the update?

    Thanks.

My roommate has a nexus one with 2.3 on it, and he downloaded the recent googlemaps update as well. He has said he's noticed his battery seems to be draining faster than he's used to, but nowhere near as significantly as I'm seeing on my G2.

If it was the recent maps update, I'm wondering if its not liking 2.2, or the G2, or the settings I normally keep my phone at. As i've said, I uninstalled the recent Maps update (but not the other recent updates I downloaded- google authenticator, youtube remote, and twitter) and I have my phone currently charging (since it was already at 50% around 9am after unplugging my phone at 530 this morning).. Once its charged back up, I'll see if that helped any.
