Per this document - http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-3407#Mac - I should see the device in the finder when I plug it into the laptop with the included USB cord.
As a result, I also cannot upgrade the firmware (I guess) because it doesn't see the device either. I've tried it three times (that means I've launched, closed and relaunched multiple times). See http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2932
The manual -- available via ZTE not TMobile -- http://www.zteusa.com/support/um/201110/P020111130204200329591.pdf -- says that the device works with both Macs and PCs but you can't prove it by me.
What does this hoop-de-do-dah do other than provide a shortcut to http://mobile.hotspot ? It must do something, since I can't install the firmware upgrade without it.
Suggestions? Someplace to download the missing software that supposedly one would see if the MBP could "see" the device?
Yes I have a PC. No I don't want to have to go through this on a secondary (not-mobile) machine.
