    Some Galaxy SII Questions

Hi everybody, I have been using an iphone for a couple of years but my 3gs was getting pretty slow so I decided to try out the GS2.  There are some things I like about it and some that I don't and it seems much more complicated to get things the way I want them.  I am going to give the phone a couple of weeks though before I make a decision on keeping it or not.  I was hoping someone could answer some of the current questions that I have about the phone.

      1.  I bought some music from the Play Store and I have it set to play offline in Play Music.  This works pretty well but I want to be able to control the music player from the lock screen like the iphone, I find that very handy.  I think the only way to do that, is to use a player like Winamp or PowerAmp but I can't seem to get my music from Play Music into these other apps.  It shows up in PowerAmp but it all has no artist or song information, they all say unknown.  Any ideas or suggestions in this area?  Also a way to get quicklaunch for camera on the lock screen?

      2.  Sometimes when I send picture messages, they show on my phone as a slideshow, even when I send one picture. Why is this?

      3.  The email app works great with my gmail account, it only shows the folders I have set to show through the gmail desktop settings.  The Gmail app though that comes with the phone shows all gmail folders even though they are set not to show.  I can't figure out how to hide them.  I would like to just use email app and delete gmail app but this is not possible.  Any suggestions?

      4.  Can I change the 4 icons locked to bottom of screen?  Can I remove messages and put email there instead for example?

Overall I like the phone, but I feel a little lost setting some of it up.  Any hep would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is there a way to sync everything up to google kind of like icloud for ios?  If I lost my phone would my notes still be there, photos, etc..

I really can't answer how things are synced with Apple products.  My wife has an iPad but I've never really used the icloud as it's fairly new to us.  Nevertheless on to Android.  Do you have a PC or a Mac for starters?  If you have a PC than you need to create a Music folder.  Then I'd recommend just putting all your MP3's here as you'll be able to open your folders on the PC like a thumb drive.

Windows 7 PC's may be able to find the drivers and connect the phone. If not the Samsung website has the drivers.  You should be able to drag all your files and folders.  The best part is all your apps are automatically synced with your gmail account and the play store.

I saw this on Youtube last night and thought this was interesting., It's a 3 part series and may change the way you view your iPhone, then again maybe not.

Download this ( https://play.google.com/music/listen#manager_pl ) and it will sync music from your pc and you android device to google cloud so you won't have to worry about losing your music, You can also purchase music from google on your pc and it will show up on your android device.

PowerAmp is the best. To play your Play Music offline songs, add the folder /Android/data/com.Google.Android.music/cache to the folders PowerAmp monitors.  As for the icons, open the app drawer then hit menu and edit. This will allow you to edit your app drawer as well as drag apps into the dock bar. The only one you can't replace is the icon for opening the app drawer.

That was the only music player that I was able to get my Play music files into.  The only problem was that they all show up as unknown artist and unknown title even though in my Play Music app they are all titled and have the artist name and album artwork.  Any idea why they go to Poweramp with no info??

You should definitely use icloud, it backs up just about everything on your phone/ipad.  When I upgraded to a new iphone, I just signed in with my apple ID and the new phone was set up exactly like my old phone, contacts, pictures, apps, everything.

So the GS2 does a similar thing through gmail and google play?

No your personal files and music are all on your computer.  You simply put your phone into USB mode to transfer files.  Or you could download and use All Share and Kies Air but that requires you to be within the same network. Here's a 4th option with google cloud,

I had the same thing happen with Play music in PowerAmp. I think it has to do with the way Google Play handles their metadata. I've only gotten a few songs, so I munually edited the info for those. I prefer to get my music from Amazon, since theirs is in standard MP3 format with all the metadata and album art as it should be. Plus, they are usually cheaper and their app can be set to auto-download purchases to my phone so I don't have to perform that extra step.

I have been playing around and I now have a few more questions..  I noticed when I go into my gmail folder on my desktop, it added lables for imap/sent and imap/deleted.  Can I not have it do this and just put these emails in with the regular sent and deleted label?  The iphone did it that way and it works better for me.

Also, if I log out of the facebook app, when I log back in it makes me do the sync and prompts me for the tutorial again.  I don't want to leave it logged in all the time but when I log out it says it will remove all data and prompts me again next time.  Any way to change this?

Any battery saving tips?  That is my biggest problem I am dealing with right now.  The phone is growing on me but the battery will not last me a full day and I am not a heavy user at all.  Don't stream music or video at all really, just text, email, etc..  I am trying the power saver mode, changing the syncing settings, trying some battery saver apps, etc..  Not much progress yet, any tips or suggestions?

Maybe I'm not the most fit for helping you change your features on Gmail to match how it worked on your iPhone.

If you're not going to utilize the apps as intended it's kind of difficult to expect them to behave the way you want them to.  I'd recommend for Facebook just un-install the app and just check it using your web browser.  No more syncing issues there.

I still don't quite understand why you're checking Gmail though your email app instead of Gmail app?  I think because you're so used to Apple you still will have a degree of difficulty as you're added extra steps to doing simple functions.  Maybe the web browers is again your solution.  I'll need more information to help help you resolve this issue you can PM me and I'll assist you.

When I bought a new iphone, I logged in to the new phone with my apple id and the new phone was set up exactly like the old phone, I think everything synced on except for maybe old text messages.  Was pretty cool, you can get new phone and have it set up like old one immediately just by logging in.

Can this be done if I upgrade to a new android phone?  What exactly is backed up and what is the process like if I get a new android phone?

Also, anyway to have music controls on the lock screen?  How about a camera launcher from app screen?

I just went into my contacts and selected "merge with google" and it said it was done and all contacts on phone now have a "g" next to them but when I go into gmail on my computer I do not see these contacts added anywhere.. Where did they go??

For lockscreen stuff, check out WidgetLocker. It costs a few bucks, but it's nothing short of awesome. It replaces your lockscreen with a completely customizable one that you can put apps, shortcuts and even widgets on. Here's a pic of mine. (I made it cluttered on purpose, yours could look so different, you'd think it was from another OS altogether)

                                    https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5bSZE9aJyJU/T5NeGQsWZeI/AAAAAAAABZw/eN0cBqaQylE/w497-h373/12%2B-%2B1

Of course, PowerAmp has a lockscreen feature. Enable it in settings and when music is playing and you turn the screen on, it goes to a full screen widget with album art and controls, with a button at the bottom marked Unlock that takes you back to your lockscreen. I use it in combo with WidgetLocker.
