I'm sorry you're having problems with the external LCD display on your device. I wasn't able to find any known issues or firmware updates for your device and this issue. If the display back-lights for the first ring, that should mean that the hardware is ok and we have a software glitch. The big thing you can do is to ensure all your information is backed up and use the user manual to complete a master reset on the device. This will set all settings back to their defaults and will resolve any software problems.

The suggested remedy did not affect the phone's misbehavior.
The external display, still, goes dim after 3 seconds, making it impossible to read the caller-id.
The menu-accessible display settings only adjust the internal screen.
I would have bought the Samsung flip phone, but there was no stock available the day I needed a replacement.
Historically, 8 of my 9 Samsung phones were hardy and reliable, though unremarkable, while LG phones have always found a way to disappoint, despite some more clever featurism.
Bummer. In these times, I really can't afford to buy another phone, even a cheap one.
