Samsung Galaxy S2 Extreme Data Usage Problem

hi i have had my sg2 for about 5 months now and love it and had lil to no problems with, until recently i have been having a data usage problem. Last month i went over my 5gb data plan and didnt know how i did that but excepted as my fault thinking that i must have used it more than i though. The billing cycle just started for me on the 7th of this month and I have been watching everthing i do and my data is at 49% of 5gb used already in 7 days exactly. The 7 days i have been watching my phone i have been at home 90% of the time and not on my phone but been using my pc,i didnt use my phone at all other than making phone calls/texts on purpose just to see what happens(my phone has been on wifi the majority of the time). So i called tmobile tech and the first guy told me that i must have been using my phone alot and i explained to him i havent even touched my phone, havent downloaded any new apps or even used any apps. He told me i need to do a master reset cause its my apps that are causing the problems and i told him once again ive had these apps since i had purchaced my phone. So i called tech support again and went over the same problem i am having and she told me they are aware of the problem and its happening nation wide and it has nothing to do with my phone, the problem is on there end with the 4g network and they are working to fix it. she said she will credit my account for the loss/trouble i went through. So basically i wanted to let people be aware of the problem.(i wrote this while i was on the phone with tech support). So dont do the master reset if they tell you it is not needed and wont solve the problem. So if your having this problem now you know why!

I think your problem has been addressed on here before.  Nevertheless you very well may have something that's trying to send and is hung up using your data.  Recommend that when you're home put you phone in Wi-fi mode.  Also go through your phone and delete all your outboxes/sent emails in all your email accounts.  Then your sent text messages.  I hope this helps.

As animaleyezz said, people either have a rogue app [whether it's new or not -- updates count as "new" because you don't know if they added something that's doing it], or email getting stuck in your outbox.  Some people have noted it's with some streaming app that doesn't close all the way.

Best way to find out?  Install a data monitoring app -- I've used PhoneUsage, but there's a few others that people have recommended which I can never remember.  Using a tracking app should help you determine quickly what's at fault and either clear data on it or uninstall it.

The only thing I'd add is text messages don't have anything to do with data usage -- but it's still a good idea to keep total messages in your Messaging app down for performance.

Rule of thumb: It's always facebook or some other social media app/news app that's polling every 15-30 minutes for data.  that you didn't have the issue prior to this month denotes that it's something you've installed recently.  Try going through and uninstalling stuff one at a time and see what it is through process of ellimination.

And a master reset?  For data useage - you must have been speaking to one of the third-world country call centers where everyone speaks with a heavy colombian accent but is named "brian or sally."

I wouldn't say ALWAYS facebook -- HTC Sense has a bug that Twitter causes extreme data usage

But, it could be the polling apps as well -- thanks for that suggestion!

I dont facebook or twitter, id get into to much trouble if i did lol

Yeah - I just like to give facebook a hard time because they're app is such a pile.  But yes - anything that's polling constantly is a place to check.  One other thing of note - go into your google account and check if it's set to auto sync your calendar and contacts - that's another big one that's useless (especially if you set a recurring calendar event to remind you to manually since them every couple of weeks).

I still can't figure out how advanced technology makes us dumber...but it seems to affect the way that "dumbness" is applied to program design all the time

eehh -- I don't find calendar and contact syncing useless.

I do a lot both on my PC and phone when it comes to both of those, so I find them extremely useful.  And, let's not forget if someone forgets to sync before they Factory Reset!

But, everyone has their own preferences!

Getting halfway through 5GB in 7 days isn't going to be an app polling too frequently, unless it's broken and polling almost all the time (like happened way back with one of the first versions of Yahoo Mail, it crashed T-Mo's network). It's going to be an app that's not functioning as it should. 3G Watchdog and Onavo are good apps to use to find what's eating your data. Find it and either uninstall it or clear all its data to see if you can get it to ackright.

Thanks for this information because I have been having this same exact problem for more than a month.  I have continously called trying to get the matter resolved and I'm being told that's it's a problem on my end.  They are not trying to do anything to reconcile the problem and I asked about being compensated for the problem and nothing has been done.  I will call them back and mention that I see that I'm not the only that has had this problem with the phone.  I did ask to speak to a supervisor about this matter and currently is still waiting for a reply.  If I don't hear anything back I will be contacting them again on this matter. Thanks again for this input.

Your not going to get any action, because it is a problem on your end. If you installed an app that performs poorly and is sucking data, that's not their fault at all. You need to use one of the apps I suggested above, track down what's using your data, and kill it. If you never change the oil in your car, and it blows up, the warranty isn't going to cover a new engine. You have to maintain your own device.

Jaylanphnx, I installed Onavo on my phone over a month ago. It's not even working correctly.  One minute it will say that I have used over 5GB of my data, but when I go to check the apps activities it doesn't show that there has been much usage.  The meter is in the green cell.  Last night the Onavo stated that more than 5G were used now it says that only 88% of my data plan has been used.  There is something really going on here because it shouldn't be bouncing back and forth.  I wasn't able to access my internet on my phone due to the data usuage and now this morning it opened up  without any problem.  It shouldn't be doing this at all.  The apps that I have on here are the same ones that were installed the same day I purchased the phone.  After 4 months of having the phone I began to have this problem. There's no way that more than 5GB of data can be used within 2 hours of the data being reset.

Try App Brain Ad Detector and see if this helps.
